Armored trains

Post by nobikaigan »

Does anyone use these effectively? I have tried to use them as a shock weapon but their limitations are too great for me to get much usage from them... Of course they should only be able to travel on rails, but then it looks like they can only attack units which are in cities? I drive my armored train up alongside an enemy unit and can only launch an attack if the enemy is in a city... Is this correct?

I am a semi-competent wargamer but I have been struggling against the AI in this game for a week now... I just can't seem to find a viable tactic to advance, and when I play 100% defensive (as either side) I do better for a while but end up getting my lines overwhelmed eventually. I was hoping to use these armored trains to help push through key points but that didn't help much. Any advice on using these units?

they seem more like a defensive weapon to me. capable of defending numerous cities/fortresses from a central position. their offensive capacities are very limited because they can only attack units located on a railroad hex.

They can only attack units on rails. Attacking represents moving into the enemy hex to attack their positions. If there's no rail line heading towards the enemy positions, the armoured trains can't attack.

I could have sworn that I tried to attack an enemy garrison that was on a rail line... I must be mistaken. Of course at that point my Eastern front was in full collapse so I was getting ready to launch my keyboard across the room again, so I might have been overlooking some details!

Umeu - I would think they are terrible on defense, in that they would not have much ability to dig in... As a quick reaction force for holding off a rouge garrison maybe, but in a concerted defensive role I just don't see them being very useful. Of course my limited experince with this unit is obvious, so I might give that a try. I just don't think that they would be more cost effective than Inf or Garrison units.

well yes pretty much as a first reaction to hold before the other units come. i think theyre only useful early in the game when russia has to cover alot of ground quickly or later to hold against turkey in armenia or whatever. i wouldnt ever make an armored train myself, or an armored car for that matter. i think some units need another look to see if they can be updated in some aspects because right now i just dont see reason to make a decent amount of units that are available
