Uh oh! Our two Commanders are planning a barbie!
History repeating itself?

Legend has it that on Christmas Day 1915, soldiers from both sides of the WW1 trenches met up in No Man’s Land for a game of football. No official record was posted for this brief meeting between the enemy, so evidence of what took place is sketchy. However, Bertie Felstead, the last known survivor of the match, died in July 2001 aged 106 years. Felstead, a member of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, recalled the following...

On Christmas Eve, he was stationed in northern France with his colleagues near the village of Laventie when he heard the Germans in a trench 100 metres away singing “Silent Night”. In reply, the Royal Welsh Fusiliers sang “Good King Wenceslas”.

On Christmas Day, after some shouting between both trenches, he and his colleagues got out of their icy trench and greeted the Germans. Bertie Felstead recalled that the Germans probably were already out of their trench before the British got out. He claimed that nothing was planned and that what happened was entirely spontaneous. A football was produced from somewhere – though he had no idea from where. “It was not a game as such, more of a kick-around and a free-for-all. There could have been fifty on each side for all I know. I played because I really liked football. I don’t know how long it lasted, probably half-an-hour, and no-one was keeping score.”

The truce ended when a British major ordered the British soldiers back to their trench with a reminder that “they were there to kill the Hun not to make friends with him.” The mood of Christmas friendliness was shortly broken by the firing of British artillery. Felstead described the Germans as “all right”...

Wasn't that in '14? Both sides took great measures to ensure that would not happen again

Hey Mowby/Brian, Welcome onboard!

Provisionally, I've put you down with the Allies (don't be too greedy Leci... You can't grab all of the good players, lol! ;-)).

Let's see how June 6th plays out, ie. which BGs get dissolved, which finish in poor shape, which survive. Once Commanders' orders are in, we'll put you on a side where you get a game... Most likely with the Allies (Germans appear to have more BGs on the Strat Map, but a lot of those are passive "Ost" battle groups "defending" strategic value sectors)

Post any questions here, or PM me (GM) or Brummbar44 (Strategic Allied Commander) with anything on your mind...

Hehe... I think you mean Mowby, right? No harm, no foul. Nothing bad meant.
Tbh I'm astonished so many great players want in on GJS'44 this time...
It's going to be tough to keep pumping out challenging maps for these guys!!

PS. Did you decide which 3 maps you'd like to see as part of your pre-June 7th recon?

Glad to have an experienced commander, it will likely be tough going. Not sure if you are up to speed on the situation but I've added you to the Allies group (in the Tournament section) so you can see what we've been planning. Hope to get more info to you and the rest of Allied command soon.

Mlazar, iProp, Jcb and Mowby... Please remind me of your timezones?
So Commanders can best match players for battles...

I am in EST. The DC area, so I can spy on the pentagon and learn where the allies will land on D-DAY. We will mine the beach and cover them in artillery fire. ;-)
I really do live in the DC area.

Well if Commanders send BG leaders in their daily orders, they won't be able to actually do any time zone matching.

Allied airmen lost in cloud, June 6th, find themselves too far down the River Aure... Over the historic town of Bayeux...

Thanks Mike! :-)

Hehe, before you get your expectations too high for poor Al... Al knows the "old" Bayeux well... It was a more open map, with lots of fields... Unrealistically generous to armour...

The upgrade is a proper mediaeval town... Think of those annoying little European roads which wind all over the place, rather than sensible grids and blocks... with a Norman Cathedral in the main square and the river Aure running through...

Don't worry, you'll find plenty of tank country in the sectors they're supposed to be in...

You can always use the GJS'44 Strat Map as an approximate guide for roads, tracks, highways, bridges, rivers, streams, woods, fields, towns and villages, the Colombelles steelworks, etc... They'll all be there... -> viewtopic.php?f=87&t=38844&start=40#p364142
