No one knows whether it is possible to fight a modern general war between the great powers without escalating to nuclear. It might be possible!
But the fact that we are having this discussion suggests that the modern global scenario probably not the best #1 priority for Commander.
I'd vote for a Napoleonic redo with LOTS of chrome.

I'd like to see World War III ; 1960' or 1970's NATO vs Warsaw Pact war. Lots of armor/mechanized ground units, jet planes, rockets and missiles, and nuclear powered ships and subs.
You could start it after a bad Cuban Missile crisis gone wrong and WWIII starts with a massive wave of Russian troop invading Germany, ie NATO's cold war nightmare.

My vote would be for an alternative late 80s/early 90s history-line, where the Warsaw Pact invades West Germany and initiates WWIII, instead of the Soviet Union abandoning communism.

I still don't like the idea of a post WW2 game, especially when there are interesting periods before WW1.

Pacific WW2 war, ala Pacific General brought up-to-date
Re: What's the NEXT Commander after this one?
I am not interested in conflicts pre-WWI.
A cold war-Campaign NATO vs Warsaw-Treaty is an option. Difficult to deal with atomic bombs, they will end the game in turn one. What role will China play? Cicil War weakend but friendly to USSR ? Or in opposition to all others the third party in the east-west conflict ?
A pacific WW2 - version will be fine, too.

I haven't even played CTGW yet, but plan to get it for sure.
In general, I'd prefer WWII and before as setting...I could even imagine this engine enhanced for ancient or medieval games. "Commander - Persian Wars" or somesuch...

I’ve got it, its called:
“Beyond Berlin”
May 8, 1945, Germany surrenders to the Allies unconditionally.
June 24, 1948 distrust between Western Allies and Soviet Russia boils over when the Soviets blockade Berlin (Berlin Blockade) from the Western Allies who, hypothetically, take a hard line rather then the air lift and WWIII begins.
The Soviet’s aim is to conquer the rest of Europe and bring it under the Communist Umbrella. The Western Allies, the genesis of NATO, aim is to free the people of Eastern Europe from the yoke of Communism.
You can use the same maps you have, its still Europe, the starting lines are the historical divisions from the end of WWII. You can have tech upgrades with copious use of scientific advances from the late 40’s and 50’s with all kinds of advanced units.

Guys let face it...look at how active commander europe at war is doing after all those years.
My advice to the game developers is that the next installment should be WW2, which the same touch and gameplay as they did with panzer corps and commander the great war.
By the way, altrough i am a very poor player of CTGW i realized that is very complex, you should think with many turn in advance, since you need superioraty in material to achieve breaktroughts.

Yes! Something that not others have done in a time...like a Vietnam Wargame. Mmm...or the Thirty Years' War (for example, as an old warVasquez wrote:American civil war =)
