Charging into trouble

Post by AlbionOak »

A Cavalry BG declares a charge against LF which are shooting at it.
They evade into the safety of forest - must the cavalry charge into the forest?

Assuming yes. They roll 6 on VMD (+ 2MU). They end in the forest, so total cavalry move of 3MU?

Cannot see anything in rules to gainsay this but I am enquiring as I may have missed something, other rules often state you need not charge/move involuntarily into difficult terrain.

"However, shock troops will not charge without orders (and are therefore not required to take a CMT to prevent charging) in the following circumstances:
If their move* could end even partly in terrain that would disorder or severely disorder them.
(...)
(* If the enemy who would be charged are capable of evading - see later - assume a charge move distance of 2 MUs more than the shock troops’ normal move distance. This is the maximum variable move distance that could be added.) "

Thanks for the reply Carlos.
I was aware of this but the question pertained to non-shock cav whose target was in the open when charge was declared.
The target LF then (sensibly) evade into forest. I can see nothing in the rules to say that the cavalry have the option not to charge into the forest ,where they'll be severely disordered.
I suppose the reasoning is that the charger should anticipate the LF response and not order a charge in a potentially difficult situation.

Yup.

We could have made the rules more complex to make the game less skillful but we decided not to.
