Clevedon 25mm FoG DAY TWO (Pictures Added)

As it had been agreed that no one would play anyone from the same club. A prize was awarded for the best visiting player and the best home player.

Richard Bodley-Scott won the 'Away' trophy ,Andy Whitby the 'Home' trophy.

Thanks to Don & co for organising an excellent weekend.

Some thoughts on the 25mm 6'x4' tournament format:

You will notice (see the Day 1 thread) a certain prevalence of pike armies. This was also a tendency in DBM 3.1 25mm tournaments.

I would point out, however, that the winning army only had 1 BG of pikes (and 2 BGs of Roman legionaries) - it was the post-55 BC variant of the Later Ptolemaic list.

However, I think that with the constrained table space of 6' x 4' tables, pike armies are very strong.

If people want to see more variety of armies it may (paradoxically) be preferable to have themed 25mm tournaments.

On the way home we were thinking that the Oxford club may be able to host another 25mm comp this time using 8x4 tables still 650pts,any takers,I think we have 2 possibilities,late July or Early Aug both are close to Britcon and Roll Call.
I'm thinking that the extra 2ft may even the playing field a bit against the pike

By the way I did score some albeit not many,it appears I'm going to have to get knitting needles out Lyndas better at this as well,unfortunately she knits better as well

I wonder if the mix would alter some if you played 650 pts on an 8 x 5' (which is standard for most US tourneys)...........[Dave, thinking ahead here.]

Just going on what tables we have available,although on reflection I think the ones in the vallage hall are indeed 8x5 it just depends on whether we need any extra

I would like to add my thanks to Don for the competition. However, we must not forget the two most important people there Don's wife and daughter who kept as fed and plied us with drinks.

I certainly learnt a great deal and look forward to another competition. !5mm and 25mm does feel to play differently.

Just a couple of things I would like to point out.

1. There was two competitions, The 'Away Player' was Richard Bodley-Scott with a Later Ptolemaic.
The 'Home Player' was joint, Andy Whitby with Pincipate Roman and Steve Hacker with Alexandrian Macedonian.

2. The draw was very badly distorted to keep people from the same club apart.

3. I took more points off Richard Bodley-Scott than any other player. I still lost, but I think Richard would agree I was less equiped to fight him than any of the other armies.

4. I managed good wins against, Early Romans, Alexandrian Macedonians and Later Carthaginians with a cavalry based army.

What I hoped to show with the pictures, was that the table was not edge to edge with figures and that most armies stood a reasonable chance.

Many of those who took part said that with the experience gained they would re-organise their armies. Most said they would not change their army.

While I agree with Richard that 6 x 4 tables in 25mm restrict certain armies, this is nothing new. However, I feel FoG certainly does not make the situation any worse. I certainly would not have done as well with the Sassanid Persians in a DBM 3.1 competition.

Anyway it's out with the 15mms in preporation for Usk early in 2008.

Big thanks to everyone who came and made it such an enjoyable weekend.

In terms of game score yes, but only by retreating into a thin strip of table and surviving until the time limit. Your army did not actually inflict any attrition points. All my other opponents did, even if only by looting my baggage.

I only bring this up to point out that your cavalry army could not really do anything much against my wall of infantry (who, though it may not look like it from the picture of an early stage of the game above, wheeled 90 degrees and formed a line filling the table from long side to long side).

Great to see the piccies and to hear it went well. Those big figures do look so much better.

Sadly I am only just reemerging from the troubles of late .... however I have an Early Imperial Roman army on the go in 25mm at present and will be rebasing my NKE as well. So hpopefully sometime next year I may get a chance to get them out - Oxford sounds a possibility.
