We're still trying to work out how to deal with the Eastern Front. Given its scope, it might need to be a sequel rather than an expansion!

Cheers

Thank you for the reply Pip. Either way you go with it I'll be in line to purchase. I would like to see a North Africa expansion at some point.

Due to the immense amount of graphics needed for the Eastern Front (not only the units but the terrain) Pip is "spot on" when it comes to it getting its own game. Not only would there (probably) be more campaigns in the package as a result but the cost would justify the enormous amount of work that the Graphics folks would have to do (Richard + helper if needed).

I would gladly pay for such a title as that way it ensures Slith does not have to "cut corners" in order to stay within budget.

What about 'what if' scenarios?

Although the Crete campaign cast a negative shadow for Hitler re the use of paratroops (although Eben Emael had been successful in 1940), there was plans mooted to use paratroops to capture Malta and Gibraltar - one or both of these locations being captured would have been decisive for the Axis. Although to be fair, the Gibraltar scenario was somewhat scuppered by poor diplomatic overtures from Ribbontrop towards Franco.

Certainly the use of paratroops by Germany was ahead of the game. The Crete operation, although 'successful' resulted in heavy losses due to the Germans having to support a bungling Italian state with regard to the Balkans and Greece almost on a adhoc basis.

One might wonder that if the Crete episode had been better planned and resourced leading to less casualties, the fate of Malta and Gibraltar might well have been sealed.

Sooo many what ifs.

If they had taken Malta and screw the casualties, odds are the Axis would have won the war. Malta killed Rommel, it wasn't ole Monty. Monty did a nice job defending while Rommels supplies and forces were sent to the bottom of the Med, but it was Malta that did him in. no Malta and I doubt Monty would have even arrived in time to be so damned great.

Loss of Suez would have been fatal to the Allies. Rommel takes oil, Rommel takes India (along with a more than willing Japan) and hits Russia from the South, Germany doesn't lose the 6th Army in the greatest example of why Hitler was not even good enough to wear corporals stripes. Because they wouldn't need to go that far south to begin with. The list goes on. And don't go thinking Torch would save the day. The US pretty much showed how ready it was at Kasserine to fight Germany in Afrika. Picture what would have happened if Rommel wasn't being chased by Montgomery. Patton likely would have had his chance to meet Rommel in one tank. He might only have that one tank.

And all because Hitler was afraid to kill off some elite troops. Seems like he was ok with leaving the DAK to die at Alamein, and the 6th to die at Stalingrad, and he was the reason for the loss of the Normandy beaches too not letting the army attack (because he was sleeping). I think Hitler was fiiiiine with killing troops if it mattered to him that they died for his whims.
