What is the function of the drill sergeant on the battlefield? Anyone have a link to a webpage or forum post that lists all of the units and their stats/functions?

It will promote any unit to the 1st level of veteran status.

Yes and never hold it back till later, as it has no use to an already promoted unit, so there is no gain reserving it on the basis a reinforcement miiiight need it.
