Problem with GS2.10 Install

Post by mroyer »

So, I downloaded GS2.10 from the Slitherine site and as instructed uninstalled GS2.0.
I then unpacked the downloaded .zip and ran the upacked 2.1 .exe installer.
The install appears to have gone properly; I got the install complete/finish dialog window and clicked on finish.

When I clicked on the short cut on my desktop it presented me with the initial splash screen allowing Fullscreen and Enable Sound to be checked. I unchecked full screen (I actually tried this both ways with the same result) and left sound on. I then clicked the okay button.

I was presented with the Language Select dialog (and a java command window behind) from which I clicked on the English flag. I then was asked whether I wanted high or low graphic quality. I selected High (I actually tried this both ways).

A entry video then played showing clips from WW2. After the video completed, the Java window remained with two text entries and the game never proceeded beyond that point (and I waited quite a bit of time, at least 5 to 10 minutes):

Any thoughts or help on what I might have done wrong? (Also, GS2.0 was working fine before the install. And, there was never any indication that I was actually running GS2.1 after the install, although I did look at the SlithLaunch.exe that the short cut was pointing to and it was dated today, so I expect that I was running GS2.1.)

Which folder did you select to install the game?

Error message looks like something with the sound. Try to start with sound off to see if it starts at all.

I just installed to the default directory, whatever that was.
Thanks, I'll give it a go with sound off.
(So,those are "error" messages and not just informational messages?

You should NOT select the default folder unless you're absolutely sure this is the correct one. I suggest you reinstall GS v2.1 and browse to the folder where your vanilla CeaW game is installed. Please uninstall GS v2.1 from the current location first so you don't get a double installation.

Those are not error messages, but feedback messages from the Java code. The feedback stops with setting up the sound so it indicates the code crashes or hangs there. It's possible to start the game in a mode where you can log the progress and see exactly which code line and class file the game stopped in. That is what we used for debugging.

I've spent much of the day trying every combination of uninstall and reinstall I could think of to no avail.
Perhaps my problem is my starting point.

I never had "vanilla" CEaW. My first version of the game was installed from: CEaW_Full_GS_2.0.exe

I've completely uninstalled and deleted everything I could find related to CEaW and the 2.0 mod. Then I reinstalled CEaW_Full_GS_2.0.exe and uninstalled GS2.0 then installed CEaW-112-GrandStrategy-Update-v210.exe and now the java cmd window just flashes and disappears.

The following image is how my CEaW directory looks. Anything obvious there?
Thanks again for your help.

I think you need to keep the full GS v2.0 version since it also installs the vanilla game.

When you install GS v2.1 you need to point to the folder

......\Slitherine\Military History Commander - Europe At War GOLD

That is the vanilla game folder. Make sure you reinstall GS v2.0 first if you deleted it.

Okay - I do believe that was my first scenario (although, I may have deleted 2.0 following the instruction on the slitherine d/l site). I'll give it a go.

Thanks again for sticking with this.

Ok. So I did that - uninstalled everything - reinstalled CEaW_Full_GS_2.0.exe then installed CEaW-112-GrandStrategy-Update-v210.exe over it in the ......\Slitherine\Military History Commander - Europe At War GOLD folder.

The resultant behavior is the same as my opening post (the two audio messages, then hang). I've tried unchecking the audio box with the same result.

Has anybody successfully installed 2.1 on top of full 2.0?

Tried again with a different combination (installing to the C:\Program Files\Slitherine\Military History Commander - Europe at War GOLD\CEaW - Grand Strategy folder) - still DoA.

Guess I'm just destine not to play GS2.1 :(

I guess you need the GS v2.1 full install then. I know there is a GS v2.1 full installer for those who purchase the game. You should try sending a message Slitherine and ask what to do. They should be able to help you. Just make sure you have your serial number and proof of purchase.

Good idea. I'll try that. I have my activation code and serial number at hand.
