Bear in mind that the average wage in Spain is somewhere around 10.000 GBP per year. A trip abroad, Finland in particular, is prohibitively expensive for the majority of players. I, for one, can't afford it.

That is understandable. A fair number of British players are a bit concerned about the perceived cost although it is apparently much the same as Dublin or London.

My concern with my IWF hat on is that if DBM is the only comp offered that the WIC will suffer numbers wise.

If 20-30 people registered so far that is a decent start but will numbers get to the level seen in Dublin last month?

Frankly no they won't - but they never were going to be.

Finland is nice enough, but there are less Finns playing than Irish and helsinki is a much less attractive venue for practically all of Europe compared to Dublin given the (real or percieved) travel & incedental costs & travel times, and the same holds true for players from the RoW even though non-European participation at European IWFs has always been marginal anyway.

This is before any "are people still playing DBM ?" issue.

Just a note to say that it looks like the Finns will take a view as to whether non-DBM/R comps will be run in Helsinki after 31/12 - which is the closing date for pre-booked block entries from national organisations.

Marvellous. So if you want to go to Helsinki, then to make sure, you have to play a game you don't want to - or alternatively hope that not many people turn up so you can then play something you do want to...

Good Grief. You don't want to encourage the Greek players into FoG at Helsinki! I've played the Greeks before and they're very good at wargaming. Can't we encourage them to stick with DBM

This was posted by Hannu on the Finnish site.
Some updates are made to the WIC08 website.

The list of non-wargaming activities are at:
http://www.wargames2008.org/index.php?209

Some info about the accommodation:
http://www.wargames2008.org/index.php?40

I try to publish the maps to the venue during the weekend.

Saunas seem to be quite a regular feature!
