SP Scenario: Road Trip to Kohanovo

Post by Nerdator »

Here's the product of my fiddling with the scenario editor over the last couple of days. It's my first one, so don't be gentle.

The old version is here:
https://rapidshare.com/files/2922727382/Kohanovo.zip

(just the scenario files, the rest is vanilla (at least, AK/1.10 vanilla. I used some objects from the AK set))

The map is designed to be played only as the Allies. In fact, I am thinking of making a short campaign based on a small Soviet offensive during Barbarossa, and this would be the first scenario (hence its relatively low difficulty), so I'm looking for your feedback to see if I'm not a completely wrong person for doing this.

Unit scale is batallion (as you will be able to see from the unit names, all historical), and hex scale is around 1 kilometre. The player takes command of the 13th Tank Division in July 1941 in east Belarus. I have tried it on Colonel and Field Martial, and DV is doable (although I haven't been able to reach it without unit losses).

Since I haven't come up with a way to add a briefing to a separate scenario in-game, here's the briefing:

Colonel Grachev, as you know, our corps is about to take part in the counteroffensive directed at Lepel: the Germans have been advancing too quickly for us to build up solid defenses at Vitebsk, so a counterattack against their mobile units' flank in this area, if successful, will weaken them and give us enough time to prepare for their assault on the city.

For now, your division will play a secondary role and advance south of the main direction of this attack. Your current task is to deploy your division on the outskirts of Orsha and proceed to Kohanovo. This is your main objective at this point and not taking it on time or at all will jeopardise the whole operation. Additionally, you are urged to secure the roads to Senno and Tolochin: although these are secondary objectives, keep in mind that holding on to these roads will allow for better coordination among our formations and will let us deal a heavier blow to the German forces in this area.

You should expect some resistance on your advance to Kohanovo. Tolochin, 12 kilometres west of Kohanovo, was taken yesterday and it is reasonable to believe that you will encounter German vanguard units. The good news is that in the last couple of days it has been raining heavily and any attacks from German air force are very unlikely. The mud will slow you down, though, so make sure you keep up with the plan of the operation.

For this phase of the operation you will also be given command of the 381th Motorised Rifle Regiment which is deployed to the south and will support you if you encounter more resistance than your division can cope with on its own. Unfortunately, it is motorised only on paper now, as mobilisation plans for trucks were not completed, so their infantry moves on foot, and only a small part of their artillery could be saved during the last weeks.

This is all, you are dismissed. Good luck!

I meant that I wanted to get frank feedback and to know this scenario's faults. :)

A little too much rain. Every turn was mud except two.

Razz, it's 40% rain, so you have probably been unlucky to get mud in all but two turns. I think there have been at least 3-4 Dry turns in all my plays.

The overall bad weather and the initial mud are there to reflect the real weather conditions during that combat, plus (for a number of reasons) I didn't want to put any aeroplanes in this scenario. Well, it is also an obstacle to a DV. :)

Any thoughts on the German units (composition, behaviour) and the combat itself?

So, I've taken someone's private advice and have built the board from scratch, using the period Red Army maps for the area. It's much more detailed now — and much harder to traverse. ;)

Here's everything:

The units are the same on both sides, I only moved some of them to fit the changed map.
