Research question

I have a specific question about research:

In each research field, there are 3 sub-fields. You have the option to spend a focus point to concentrate your research on a sub-field.

What happens when a sub-field is maxed out (attained the maximum level of research) and you still have a focus point on that field? Are research point still being spent on that sub-field even if it maxed out?

If that is the case, then when this situation arises, you should switch back to balanced research or spend a focus point on a different sub-field.

Correct, max tech level will produce WASTED research point for that technology so you are wise to switch away focus to some other tech.
