Winter is coming, you are anchored with strong numerical superiority in russia, partisans are tearing down nazi flags everywhere, strategic bombing devastation, and the british alone seem capable of getting any foothold they please. He can only implode from this position with only a few hexes to Stalingrad to show for all of 42! I'm new to 2.1 and I can already see how vastly improved the axis position is in many ways, the strategic bombing is still nauseating though.

so the game restarts

i can't remember that much about this one except that I was on the ropes a bit in Russia. But it doesn't really seem that way now.

I decide to probe a bit and see what happens - here are some afters.

our probe is bounced, but we will trade some steps this close to Winter and we want to keep pressure on the Finnish German MECH as well

I didn;t get a shot but the Atlantic front was no fun :(

two 2-0 STR v SUB results in two 1-0 and my MECH in Spain see's 4-0 turn up with it losing 2 steps!

Have you told your opponent that putting sentry on anything but fighter units is a waste of time?

I assume he knows!

Ironically this turn our Spanish MECH succeeds  won't last the turn though I don;t think :(

Image

elswehere our poor results vs SUB's continues as in the US a predicted 5-0 yields 2 and in the Atlantic we again get 1 step instead of 2

Image

in Russia we push past Tambov and continue to pressure his 'Finnish' MECH

this turn we see our MECH has died and a SUB has appeared in the Port, we decide to move off our forces to start the ferry process but our first DD hits a SUB.

we change our mind and decide to focus on SUB killing :D

Image

Image

this works in well with our general wear them down strategy which is used in tandem with our annoy them strategy

Image

Image

in Russia we have mud which is very annoying for us :( given we got a great partisan last turn (opponent not so happy!) but despite this the odds are too good to miss so we start a little offensive

December brings winter so maybe we will get a nice long severe winter :) but boy have the Axis had great weather all game

we push a little harder now in Russia as the Axis improves its defences a little - and maybe is going to try and rescue its MECH in northern Russia, go for it we say (there is another MECH to the very north off screen)

we also play spank the Luftwaffe, maybe next turn its time to play make a guard in Lennigrad!

January finally brings severe winter and we go on the attack :D

good results except for the lennigrad area where we cant make any of the key retreats occur :(

Image

I am wondering where all the Axis units are?

the casualties aren't that high that he should be this thin on the ground

Image

i think we might find a Morris style defence in Germany - so we start long term planning for this

game update

after my turn my opponent needed time to think about his next turn after he saw the green blob crossing the atlantic

just this week re returned his turn, but after 1 turn of a little grinding by the Russians and the blob arriving in the east Atlantic - with lots of destination choices he has resigned the game

the observant ones amongst you will have noticed the calculated gamble with the blob :D

Sigh...another game where someone tries an unorthodox strategy and then resigns when it doesn't work. At least give your opponent a chance to do something fun! I can't imagine richardsd is very satisfied.

Richardsd, you did a nice job with the Russians, even though you didn't get much of chance to show off your offensive skills. You would have won this game handily.

my offensive skills aren't that great, probably why I suck as the Axis :(

Actually, it appears the Allies win in '43 since the Axis conceded!
That being said, I agree with Joe. Too bad the game didn't continue.

Well, 700 infantry casualties is damn harsh for Germans. Sometimes I have less in 1945, when game ends.
All you see can easily be almost all german forces availiable (maybe couple of units in reserve, but nothing major).
So I DO see point, why your opponent asked for peace.

Perhaps the plotters succeeded in offing Hitler and sued for peace? But for a table leg it could have happened.
