Victorious but caught in the flank

Post by hazelbark »

Had a interesting situation in todays game.

Two BGs fighting.

Friendly BG charges into flank. A turn later. The original friendly BG routs. So now i have a freindly BG fighting the turned base of the enemy BG. What are the enemys options?

From page 35 it looks like they may just have to sit there. This is the conforming to enemy in close combat. Let's assume it is the the enemy BG (the one that got caught in the flank) turn. What does it do conforming wise?

My initial thought was that the BG that has defetead it's initial frontal opponent will either remain in the fomation is in with some bases fighting the flank attack and the others staying facing the rout. Or it will all conform to the flank attack.

Having just had a quick check through the rules that might not be the case. I think that the rules as stated mean that the only way to get extra bases facing the flank attack is by using the feeding bases into melee rule as there is a specific exception for conforming then you have bases at 90 or 180 degrees due to a flank or rear charge.

So after reading the rules again I think that the victorious BG retains it's dual facing and can add one file per round to the troops facing the flank attack using the feeding in more bases rule.

Your initial thought was the correct one. It also has the option to reform facing the flankers. (See last bullet of Reforming).

It is optional because we saw it as a bit cheesy to charge enemy in flank with LH, make them all turn to face, then the LH break off, then next turn the troops who they were originally facing charge them and hit them in the new flank. If they choose not to reform, and don't feed all their bases into the melee to the flank, then they will still have some bases facing their original front and will not count as being charged in the flank if hit from their original direction of facing.

OK let me try and track my questions.

I see what you are pointing at last bullet in the reforming section (p34). A BG in this situation is not forced but has the option.

Now the next section comforming to enemy in close combat has a lot of "must" but I presume that is overridden by the above bullet and it is an option.

So I assume :?: That there is a distinction between reforming and conforming. And in this circumstance only "reforming" applies?

If that is true then the player just says I refrom. That means the BG formerly hit with one stand turns 90 degrees and faces the BG that hit it in its flank?

The situation that sparked this was a 12 base Pike BG ws the one hit in the flank by a 8 base Pike BG.

Where i lost track was in all the conforming to enemy in close combat lingo.

Well the bases that were hit in the flank should already have turned. So it isn't a matter of the BG turning 90 degrees, it is a matter of the rest of the BG turning 90 degrees (optionally) = Reforming

The issue of Conforming does not usually come into it. The BG that charged the flank is the one that has to conform, so, unless something stopped it doing so, the enemy bases facing your flanking BG and your flanking BG are already Conformed.
