My Problem

Post by Patonius »

I like what I see with these rules.....

And I have been saving money to get a professional painted army. The money is there. I am ready to go.

BUT don't have the lists to see what I need to order, which means I need to wait til Feb before I order my army, which means I need to wait months til I actually get to play the game :(

Out of interest, do these rules cover ambushes, flank marches?

Cheers

Darren:

Waiting until February is very frustrating, isn't it? It's practically killing me.

I can tell you that FoG does cover ambushes and flank marches.

Hi Darren,

My understanding is that if you pre-order through Slitherine you'll get a copy of the beta rules and some draft lists.

Also, if you tell us your favourite armies and the style of game you like to play I'm sure people can get you started on what core troops you'll need etc.

I've got the above rules and lists and I'm still hanging out for the full-colour deal with diagrams and list books with allies etc :-) Let's face it, anticipation is always half the enjoyment.

Finally, there are some pretty good battle report threads that detail a fair bit about army composition.

Cheers,

Steve

I have pre ordered the rules, but through Amazon, togther with the Rise of Rome book. Which would mean that I would not be able to get the Beta lists I guess...oh well.

I like armies with solid battle lines of infantry with the cavalry on each end, and lots of skirmish troops to play with. Pretty much looking at armies like Alexandrian Macedonian, Carthaginian, etc. I have seen the example Carthaginian list on these boards, which does look good.

I was planning on painting up easy armies myself, like Numidians (I've done one of them before) or Classical Indian, and pay for the professional painter to do the harder and more attractive army, probably a Medieval army, like the Germans.

I hate waiting :(

Hi,

People can't send you the source army list because of the NDA, but you can ask people for suggested 800AP order of battle for an army. If it's a popular army (e.g. Republican Roman, Cartho, Alex Maced) you should get some suggestions. If it's a bit more obscure, or the list hasn't been written yet, then you'll struggle because the chances are no one knows (except a list author somewhere busily trying to develop the list!).

Ask us for a sample list and we'll put something together for you. Hopefully a list up to 900 points at least so you can get some variation on your troop selection from battle to battle.

Here's a few other tips on armies.

Every group will be in even numbers. Most mounted will be in mutliples of 4 or 6. Foot slightly larger groups.

What I have found is the following from my DBM lists.
I tend to need a few more Light infantry skirmisher types than I used to have
The main force of the army is still covered. ie don't really need more pike for a macedonian army, don't need more legionaires in a roman army, don't need more Timariots for the Ottomans. If you had a small number of knights you may need some more

So if you tell us what you have we can give you an estimate that you will have "enough".

I appreciate the help. I am slowly going to paint up minis over my leave in December, and wait eagerly for my pre ordered books to show. I'll base a lot of what I paint from the DBM lists, but wont actually base minis til I get the rules :)

Cheers one and all.
