A lesson learnt, and perhaps a lesson for us all?

Post by ValentinianVictor »

Well goodly FoG folk.

I've received an offer from the Travel Insurance people today for the figures I lost. Well, when I say 'offer', waht they have done is attach a cheque in 'full and final settlement of your claim'! Its for less than one fifth of what I calculated the cost would be to replace the figures with similarly painted ones.

The reason they give for this offer is because they say there is a clause in my Travel Insurance which reads-

'A number of items of Personal Luggage considered as being similar or complementary to one another or used together'

Actually, on checking my policy documents it actually states-

'The maximum We willpay You for any one article, or any one Pair or Set of articles,...'

So, they have in effect considered the wargames figures to be a 'set' or which can be 'used together'. I really cannot see a way of challenging that viewpoint as obviously the figures are meant to be played together!

I did speak to an insurance person of my aquaintance who after slapping his forehead when I related my tale, then slapping me in return, informed me that if you have wargames armies you need to insure the armies on an individual army basis, which will of course bump up the premium. He said even if your house hold policy gives cover for items taken from away from your home which are then stolen or lost you will never get the full value unless they have been expressly listed and agreed with the insurer.

I will therefore be contacting my household insurance policy people as my insurance is due for renewal and make damn sure every single remaining figure I've got is suitably insured, even if that means my premiums are higher.

That's what i used to do when I was renting. I had the whole lot insured, but the clause was that I wouldn't take more than 500 quid out at any one time.

The premium did go up, but the peace of mind was worth it.
