The Arzawan Chronicles by Lord Durham 04-2003

Post by anguille »

This particular game, though not as competitive as some of the others I've tried (read: spanked badly), at least allowed me to expand, both in territory and infrastructure. So, I figured it would be a good one to write up. I used the Anatolia Campaign and played on Normal Difficulty. To date I've played ten years.

Note that the original source documents have been translated, using the more recognizable modern dating procedures.

Arzawa

Troy

As I sit on my throne in the city of Troy, waiting on a delegation of Mycenaens from across the sea, I think back to all I have accomplished in the past ten years. The gods have truly smiled on my people, and continue to do so.

A scribe sits near by, tablet and stylus poised. It is time to recount my tale - the rise to power of the Arzawan people.

I begin the tale in the year 1500BCE. At the time our lands consisted of two major settlements: Karabel and Troy. The census takers placed the populations at approximately 3650 inhabitants in Troy and 2200 in Karabel. The land of Arzawa itself has always been rich in Food, Building Materials, Copper and Wood - all commodities that would be of use for barter at a later date.

January 1500BCE - At the beginning of the year I instructed my Envoys to travel to the court of the Milawandans, to the south, and the Sardesans, to our east. My first decree was to establish a Reed Bed in Troy, and a Large Woodsman's Hut in Karabel. Building materials would be essential for a successful infrastructure. Finally, I ordered that one Peasant Levy be raised in each city.

March 1500BCE - Zeleia is an independent settlement to our northeast. Their people have raided our lands since I was a child. Therefore, I decided it was time to do something about them. I ordered elements of my armies in Troy and Karbela to rendezvous at the Zeleian border. The newly raised Peasant Levies would assume garrison duty.

April 1500BCE - The Reed Bed was completed in Troy to great fanfare. As the festivities died, I ordered the construction of a Basic Smallholding. One could never have enough food to feed the masses.

June 1500BCE - Early in the month I was shown a demonstration of the Javelin. I was pleased with its possibilities, and promised to build the proper facilities when time permitted. Meanwhile, I was informed that my two armies had united on the Zeleian border, under the command of General Niniziya. If the gods willed it, Zeleia would be mine.

July 1500BCE - The gods willed it. A fast rider delivered the news that Zeleia had fallen. A battle had been fought between the barbaric Zeleians and the heroic Arzawarns. As it was described to me, General Niniziya placed his 3 Hupshu Skirmisher units at the front of the line. Behind them, on a patch of rough ground, he placed one unit of the lightly armed Kheietj Auxilia. Flanking them were two units of Peasant Levies, and finally two units of Militia Spearmen, to protect the wings. The Skirmishers were ordered to hold position for as long as possible, while the units behind them were to advance through them once the enemy's assault had been softened. The strategy worked well, as it was related to me. The enemy was routed and many prisoners taken. Zeleia, with its abundant Copper Deposits, was now mine.

November 1500BCE - With the completion of the Woodsman's Hut in Karabel, I decreed that space for a Large Encampment be set aside. Construction on new tenements was to be started immediately. Meanwhile, in Troy, a call went out for Reed Gatherers. More Building Materials were sure to be required.

December 1500BCE - As the year came to an end, I reflected on the modest gains the Arzawa people had made. Our borders had increased, and relations with Milawanda and Sardes remained tolerant. I decided to raise another Peasant Levy in Karabel.

January 1499BCE - The year begins on a gentle note. It has been reported that our Harvest was average. I order the army to depart Zeleia and march to Karabel.

February 1499BCE - Construction in Karabel has finished, and it has grown into a Large Encampment. People flock to the expanded settlement.

March 1499BCE - Working closely with tradesmen from the west, we learn of the technology to produce metal-tipped spears. I am sure we will find a use for this knowledge.

April 1499BCE - The call for Reed Gatherers has been a success, and the production of Building Materials in Troy has reached an all-time high.

May 1499BCE - My next command in Troy is a call for Reed Brick Makers. Meanwhile, the groundwork for a Skirmishers Barracks is laid in Karbela. Finally, a Small Fort is ordered built in the frontier settlement of Zeleia.

September 1499BCE - The next few months are spent in calm reflection. I have decided that my southern border must be secured. During this time, the army under General Niniziya reached Karabel, rested, and marched south to the border of Milawanda. Next, I ordered the recall of my Envoy from their court. Finally, I ordered the army to invade.

October 1499BCE - The Milawandans were totally unprepared for our invasion. Victory was swift. Utilising the same tactics employed against the Zeleians, General Niniziya soundly defeated the overpowered Milawandan army. The country, and its rich, productive Gold Mines, was now a part of Arzawa. Our neighbours were not pleased. The Sardesans delivered a message, declaring us their worst enemy.

November 1499BCE - With our southern border secured, I have dispatched an envoy to the court of Sarhoyuki, a land near Sardes. Shortly after that, I am informed about the completion of the Small Fort in Zeleia, and the Skirmisher Barracks in Karabel. The year has been most productive.

Part II
January 1498BCE - The gods have graced our people with an unusually large harvest. They must be pleased with my efforts. Troy attracts Brick Makers to increase production. I arrange with the merchants to sell off surplus product, then import Tin, Gems, Horses and Incense,

February 1498BCE - Troy begins to attract more people. I arrange for the eventual expansion of my Capital into a Small Village.

March 1498BCE - A small army of Tribal Independents was spotted in the mountains to the east. It was assumed they would march on Zeleia. Troops are raised in Troy. However, the attack never materialized.

June 1498BCE - This month brings much celebration as Troy has evolved into a Small Village.

July 1498BCE - Word reaches me that Karabel attracts new people, too. I arrange for my second city to expand into a Small Village. After several months of resting and rebuilding, the army departs from Milawanda and marches on Kale.

October 1498BCE - Another Reed Bed is allocated in Troy to increase production.

November 1498BCE - Karabel successfully expands into a Small Village. A Homestead is allocated to produce more food. The Copper mines at Zeleia prove very useful. I decree deeper Excavations to increase production.

January 1497BCE - Our harvest is average this year. Meanwhile, the Homestead in Karabel is completed and food production is increased.

February 1497BCE - The Reed Bed in Troy is completed and becomes operational. The output in additional Building Materials becomes immediate. Copper production in Zeleia improves as the workers Excavate deeper into the ground. Finally, messengers report that the Independent City of Kale, with its vital Gold Mines, has fallen to our victorious army.

March 1497BCE - A carpenter approached us with the idea of improving The Wheel on our Battle Carts. He has been well rewarded for his ingenuity. Milawanda is attracting immigrants, and will soon reach the status of Large Encampment.

June 1497BCE - Additional land has been cleared, allowing a Large Encampment to be completed in Milawanda. News arrives that our army advances on the Tribal Independent City of Beycesultan, meeting no resistance. A Basic Smallholding is undertaken in Karabel to improve food output.

Sepember 1497BCE - The Basic Smallholding is completed in Karabel. Of more importance, a caravan carrying food (393) is captured near the city of Beycesultan. The prize is sent directly to our granaries. It has been brought to my attention that Milawanda has good ground for horse training. I have decreed that our first Onager Stables be constructed there.

October 1497BCE - Our growing territory begins to tax our food production. I have ordered a Small Wheat Farm to be constructed in my capital city of Troy to help meet this increased demand.

November 1497BCE - Glorious news. The Independent City of Beycesultan has fallen to our army. The foundation of a Homestead is placed to help feed the new citizens of our empire. Meanwhile, to secure our frontiers, a Small Fort is ordered constructed in the city of Kale.

January 1496BCE - We enjoy a good harvest - the gods smile once more. It is reported that the Onager Stables in Milawanda are ready to produce Battle Carts, while the Homestead in Beycesultan has become operational to help feed our people.

March 1496BCE - The Small Wheat Farm is completed in Troy. Immediately I decree that a Reed Gathering expansion be built to bolster our requirements for future Building Materials. The foundation for a Small Fort has been laid in Beycesultan to consolidate our borders.

April 1496BCE - The Small Fort in Kale has been completed and the garrison increased.

June 1496BCE - Milawanda continues to attract people. I authorize the necessary land be released to accommodate these immigrants.

July 1496BCE - The Small Fort is completed in Beycesultan. Our borders are strong.

August 1496BCE - Additional Reed Gatherers have been hired in Troy. I decide to look to the northeast to protect that frontier, and order my army, under the command of General Niniziya, to depart Zeleia for the Independent City of Sakarya. Word arrives that a caravan full of rare Gems has been spotted deep within Lukkan territory. I order a Gish Battle Cart to slip in, in an attempt to recover them. I realize I flirt with war.

October 1496BCE - It is reported that Milawanda has expanded into a Small Village. There is additional land for development, once the Building Materials have been delivered.

November 1496BCE - The utter balls! We have suffered an unprovoked attack by a small Sardesan army on the Frontier Settlement of Zeleia. However, the Arzawan garrison soundly repulsed the invaders and impaled their treacherous heads on stakes at the border. Sardes will pay for this infraction.

December 1496BCE - The caravan of Gems (218) has been reported recovered in Lukka, and is on its way back into Arzawan territory. The Lukkans apparently are none the wiser. Meanwhile, messengers inform me that General Niniziya has captured Sakarya. Sakarya is well known for their Horse Paddocks. It has been a good year.

Part III
January 1495BCE - The gods have graced us with another average harvest this year. It serves to mark the occasion as the foundation for the expansion of my capital of Troy into a Large Village begins.

February 1495BCE - Though it is yet early in the year, I order my army, under the command of General Mukimeli, to advance from quarters in Beycesultan toward Sardes. I have decided to make the Sardesans pay for their unprovoked attack on Zeleia the past year.

March 1495BCE - A Basic Horse Paddock completes construction in Sakarya. We now have a ready supply of fresh mounts. As we no longer need to import them, our merchants are free to pursue other opportunities. Messengers report a small army from Lukka, a land along the southern Anatolian coast, appears to be advancing north in the direction of Kale. Reinforcements are dispatched from neighbouring towns.

April 1495BCE - My fears are realized. The small Lukkan army invades Arzawan territory and assaults Kale. However, the reinforced garrison sends them reeling in defeat. In response, I decree that Infantry Barracks be constructed in Milawanda. Meanwhile, a cache of incense has been discovered near Keleia. Troops are dispatched to recover it. Toward the end of the month I recall my Envoy from Sardes.

May 1495BCE - The Envoy returns to Troy, and is immediately dispatched to the court of the Hittites. No sooner has he departed then great news arrives. General Mukimeli has conquered Sardes. I order their King flayed alive. Woe to the vanquished.

June 1495BCE - Construction in Troy completes, and my capital reaches the status of Large Village. Next, I instruct that a Reed Bed be established to increase the production of Building Materials. Plans are laid to expand Beycesultan into a Basic Smallholding. Finally, I dispatch an Envoy to the country of Pala.

August 1495BCE - I am informed that the Infantry Barracks has been completed in Milawanda. Meanwhile, I order a Reed Bed be built in newly conquered Sardes.

September 1495BCE - A Basic Smallholding is established in Beycesultun. However, of more importance is the introduction of a metal called Bronze - its strength will make our enemies quake in fear.

October 1495BCE - An additional Reed Bed has been completed in Troy. Meanwhile, the Royal Engineers develop new ways to dig deeper mines and build larger, sturdier forts. They are well rewarded for their efforts.

November 1495BCE - The Royal Architect produces plans to expand Karabel into a Large Village. The plans are approved.

December 1495BCE - A Reed Bed is established at Sardes, and the population is put to work producing more Building Materials.

January 1494BCE - Once again we have enough rain for an average harvest. My first order of the year is to expand the Infantry Barracks in Milawanda and produce more troops.

March 1494BCE - Word reaches me that a supply of Tin has been discovered near Sardes. I order some troops be dispatched to recover it, which they do.

April 1494BCE - With construction complete, Karabel expands into a Large Village. I decree that a Blacksmith be established in that city. Meanwhile, a Religious Cult has entered my lands, spreading unrest throughout the realm with their blasphemous teachings. They must be dealt with before my people begin to believe their nonsense.

June 1494BCE - Expansion is costly, so I scour the land for Reed Gatherers to work the Beds in Troy and Sardes.

July 1494BCE - The Battle Infantry Barracks are completed in Milawanda, and a formation of trained Swordsmen are immediately commissioned. Meanwhile, Sardes is on the verge of expanding into a Large Encampment as I continue to attract settlers and immigrants.

August 1494BCE - A Blacksmith is established at Karabel.

September 1494BCE - Through ruthless persecution I have eradicated the Religious Cult that infested my lands. Now I must repair the damage caused by their teachings. I raise wages to placate the population. Sardes grows into a Large Encampment. In a move to strengthen my northern frontier, I order the foundation of a Small Fort be laid in Sakarya.

October 1494BCE - I am successful attracting additional Reed Gathers in Troy.

November 1494BCE - To supplement our food production I order Small Wheat Farms begin construction in Karabel and Beycesultan. Meanwhile, Sardes successfully attracts Reed Gatherers to enhance our construction capabilities. The year draws to an end, and as I sit on my throne, I consider our growth and expansion to be satisfactory. Sardes has been absorbed into the Arzawan Empire, and there is the small matter of the Lukkans to deal with. I set about planning...

Part III
January 1493BCE - The gods must be angry - our harvest was weak this year. My army, under the command of General Niniziya, advances on Sarhoyuk. Envoys have informed me that the ruler of this land thinks unkindly of me, calls me an upstart. I will show him what kind of upstart I am.

February 1493BCE - A Small Fort has been built at Sakarya, providing a bulwark on the northeastern lands of my empire. Good news followed. While enroute to Sarhoyuk, the army under General Niniziya captured a substantial amount of wild horses. Using that as an omen, I decreed the Onager Stables in Milawanda be enlarged.

March 1493BCE - Small Wheat Farms were completed in Beycesultan and Karabel, substantially increasing food production for the citizens of Arzawa. As a prelude to war, I recalled my Envoy from Sarhoyuk. Finally, I ordered a Horse Paddock begun in Sakarya.

April 1493BCE - The production of Building Materials received a welcome boost as the city of Sardes successfully attracted additional Reed Gatherers. As my armies invaded Sarhoyuk, I dispatched an Envoy to the land of the Yalburtans. By the end of the month the country of Sarhoyuk had fallen to General Niniziya. He sent me the Royal Family's skins as a gift.

May 1493BCE - The gods continued to smile, considering the poor harvest I was graced with. A deposit of Tin was located near Troy. I dispatched troops to secure and deliver the precious commodity.

June 1493BCE - The month began on an ominous note. The Yalburtans ejected my Envoy, gouging out his eyes and returning him tied to the back of a donkey. I am sorely vexed by this barbarous act. In time, they will face my wrath. But, good news follows. The Horse Paddock is reported completed in Sakarya. Encouraged, I send an Envoy to the land of the Konyans. Meanwhile, Sardes begins expansion into a Small Village.

July 1493BCE - An uneventful month. The Onager Stables have been expanded in Milawanda.

September 1493BCE - I receive messengers informing me a small army from Lukka has attacked Kale. They have been defeated outside the walls. However, there are reports another army approaches. I think it is time I deal with my neighbours to the southeast.

October 1493BCE - Sardes develops into a Small Village. The residents are happy, and forget that they were once independent. My rule is benevolent. Meanwhile, a second small Lukkan army is destroyed outside Kale. I recall my Envoy in anticipation of war. Milawanda begins expansion into a Large Village, while Sardes begins construction on a Homestead. Food is becoming a problem to my people, and I must take action. I instruct the merchants to barter excess trade for more food.

November 1493BCE - I dispatch an Envoy to Thrace, a barbaric land far to my north. I wish to secure that frontier peacefully.

December 1493BCE - The Homestead in Sardes is established, relieving some of my ongoing food problems. Immediately I order it enlarged to a Basic Smallholding.

January 1492BCE - Like last year, the New Year begins ominously with another poor harvest. I do not wish to see my people starve. Fortunately, the month brings some good news. A small army operating near Patar discovers a cache of Building Materials. We immediately take possession. Construction of Livestock Holdings commences in Karabel and Beycesultan, while an Envoy is dispatched to the Kilistepans. Meanwhile, an army operating under General Hattusilus departs Kale and descends on a small Lukkan army near Parha, utterly annihilating them.

March 1492BCE - I have been informed that Milawanda has grown into a Large Village, while Sardes develops a Basic Smallholding. Sarhoyuk begins to expand into a Large Encampment. It is good to see my empire grow from within.

April 1492BCE - General Hattusilus assaults the Lukkan city of Patar. From all accounts the battle is a near fought thing, and could have resulted in defeat. Fortunately, the gods smile, and my general prevails. The Lukkan army is destroyed and Patar falls.

June 1492BCE - Our success against the Lukkans continue, and another army is defeated near Parha. So far they have assaulted us with small forces. So long as they remain disorganized, we should be able to subdue the large, rocky country with little trouble. The Livestock Holdings are completed at Beycesultan and Karabel, while Sarhoyuk grows into a Large Encampment. An Envoy is dispatched to the Kizzuwatna. A fierce battle is fought with the Lukkans near Parha. The result is victory, and General Hattusilus captures the defiant city. Not to be outdone, General Imbagal invades Yalburt and conquers the country after a hotly contested battle. I do not forget past slights, and have the Royal Family skinned alive.

July 1492BCE - While my armies add to the burgeoning Arzawan Empire, Troy itself expands - on the verge of growing into a Small Town.

November 1492BCE - A rich cache of wood is discovered near Garvukale. A Gish Battle Cart regiment is dispatched to oversee its retrieval. Meanwhile, Sardes is on the verge of growing into a Large Village.

December 1492BCE - In a rather surprising, and bemusing, turn of events, a small Lukkan army has appeared on the outskirts of Milawanda. Little do they realize that Milawanda is my chief supplier of all things military - the Lukkans are defeated rather handily.

January 1491BCE - The gods have smiled on my accomplishments. The harvest was average this year, and Troy has developed into a Small Town.

February 1491BCE - Sarhoyuk begins expansion into a small village. Meanwhile, it is reported that two large armies of Hittites are on the move to my northeast. It is the first time I have heard any word from these fearsome people since I dispatched my Envoy to their court.

April 1491BCE - I am disappointed, but pleased all the same. These Hittites have invaded my lands, but the city of Sarhoyuk has managed to hold off two large armies. My envoy to the Hittite nation has been recalled. Meanwhile, Kale has repelled an attack by a small Tribal army. Sardes develops into a Large Village, so I order the construction of a Reed Bed to increase the production of Building Materials.

May 1491BCE - This is an uneventful month, beyond sending an idle Envoy to the land of the Ishuwa.

June 1491BCE - Sarhoyuk expands into a Small Village. I decree that a Skirmisher Barracks be constructed there.

July 1491BCE - I continue to consolidate my empire, regardless of the hostilities perpetrated on me by the barbarous Hittites. Patar is encouraged to develop into a Small Village.

August 1491BCE - The Reed Bed is completed at Sardes. Immediately I put out the call for Reed Gatherers.

September 1491BCE - The Skirmisher Barracks have been completed in Sarhoyuk. I order the construction of a Reed Bed.

October 1491BCE - Patar expands into a Small Village, while plans are implemented to develop Yalburt into a Large Encampment.

December 1491BCE - The campaign against the Lukkans continues. After a hazardous winter march through the mountains, General Hattusilus succeeds in capturing the Lukkan village of Eflatunpinar.

January 1490BCE - We suffer yet another Poor Harvest. Perhaps I should sacrifice more lambs? Sardes is successful in recruiting additional Reed Gatherers. Meanwhile, to show the world that Troy is a city to be respected throughout the world, I order the construction of a University.

February 1490BCE - A Reed Bed is decreed for Sarhoyuk, while Yalburt develops into a Large Encampment. General Hattusilus reaches Karahuyuk, taking the city with little resistance. The Lukkans have been added to the Arzawan Empire, and are now but a memory...

A new Period

With that said, the good Professor has come across a few more manuscripts...

* * *

June 25, 1926 - Florence, Italy

The door handle rattled for a moment before swinging open to allow Sir Jonathan Thomas York entry into his modest apartment. The elderly Professor of Antiquities eased in, an overflowing bag of groceries in each arm, kicking the door closed behind him.

Glancing down quickly, he saw a manila envelope just inside the entrance. The scrawl on the paper was familiar - it was his old friend from the University of Florence, the same one who continued to delight him by producing dusty old Annals of the near legendary Free Company.

This, however, was no Annal. Slipping into the kitchen, Sir Jonathan set the groceries down and quickly turned on the stove burner. He desperately needed a cup of tea and a smoke. Next, he put away the foodstuffs, casting the odd glance at the package that waited patiently on the floor.

Finally, temptation gave in and he stooped to pick it up, ripping the envelope open and producing the contents. He let out a sigh of delight. Remarkably, his friend had come across yet more of these Arzawan Chronicles. He stretched out the manuscript. It was a reproduction, a medieval translation from some ancient Achaean text.

The first series had taken a while to translate, and he expected this batch to be no different. A boiling kettle signaled that tea was almost at hand. He poured the water into a pot, then retrieved his pipe.

Finally, with pipe in mouth, cup in hand, and the manuscript tucked under arm, Sir Jonathan stepped onto the balcony that overlooked the Arno River. He sat down and produced some blank paper and a pen.

He had much work to do...

* * *

March 1490BCE - An Envoy is dispatched to the Arinnans, a people located far to the north and east of my lands. It's good to know if they have heard of my might. I am informed that the Reed Bed has been completed in Patar. I order another begun. A messenger arrives with word that Tribal Raiders have been located operating in the mountains to the west of Sarhoyuk. Additionally, a large Hittite army has marched close to our border near that Frontier City. I order the garrison reinforced. Finally, a Small Wheat Farm is completed in Sardes.

April 1490BCE - With great fanfare the University is completed in Troy. Scholars come from other lands and great distances to bask in its marvels. My people are proud. From the east, news comes that the Raiders march on Sardes, and not Sarhoyuk as suspected. This is followed by delightful new. Tin Deposits are discovered near Darhoyuk. I order troops dispatched to secure them in the name of the King.

May 1490BCE - The population of Parha continues to swell. I encourage it to develop into a Small Village. At the same time, I decree that a Small Fort be commissioned in Milawanda. Messengers arrive from my Envoy. Apparently the Arrinans have a Deep Dislike for us. I decide to recall the Envoy for further duties. With a need for more Building Materials, I encourage Reed Gatherers to emigrate to Sarhoyuk. A Wheat Farm is added to Troy.

June 1490BCE - The Reed Bed is completed in Yalburt, while additional Reed Gatherers are actively recruited for Patar. The Tribal Raiders are defeated outside the walls of Sardes, and their heads adorn the road leading to the main gate as a lesson to others. I decree a new army raised near Milawanda, and order it to Parha. Yalburt submits plans to expand into a Small Village.

August 1490BCE - I have been introduced to some innovative developments in the use and strength of the bow. I am assured our archers will be stronger.

September 1490BCE - Parha grows into a Small Village, and the Small Fort is completed in Milawanda. I dispatched my Envoy to the court of the Kilistepans, and initial reports indicate their attitude hasn't changed. They hold a Deep Dislkie for us. Fine!

October 1490BCE - The Wheat Farm is completed in Troy, and an abundance of Reed Gathers assemble in Sarhoyuk.

November 1490BCE - Yalburt expands into a Small Village, while Sarhoyuk is encouraged to develop into a Large Village. A Homestead begins construction in Yalburt.

December 1490BCE - Reed Gatherers are recruited in Patar, increasing our building capacity. A Homestead begins construction in Patar. I find our food situation grows worrisome, with so many soldiers in the field. However, our construction initiatives should ease the burden. Meanwhile, a copper deposit is discovered near Karabel. I dispatch troops to secure and recover the treasure.

Part II of the new period
January 1489BCE - We begin the year blessed with an average harvest. However, food production continues to remain a problem, relieved in part by the completion of a Homestead in Yalburt. I receive news that a Fire Has Devastated a Portion of our Wood Supplies. I dispatch advisors to assess the damage. Fortune smiles; the loss is minimal, so I decide to be lenient, and the foreman in charge loses only a hand. Meanwhile, I decree that Yalburt should expand into a Large Village.

February 1489BCE - A Homestead is completed in Patar, and plans are launched to develop Parha into a Large Village.

March 1489BCE - The former lands of the Lukkans continue to attract colonists, and I decree that Patar enlarge itself into a Large Village.

April 1489BCE - Sarhoyuk grows into a Large Village. The Arzawan Empire continues to expand at a surprisingly pleasant rate.

June 1489BCE - Yalburt blossoms into a Large Village, while Karabel begins plans to expand into a Small town. A newly raised army - drawn from the towns of Milawanda and Karabel - rendezvous on the outskirts of Parha. From there, they march east to relieve General Hattusilis' veteran army at Karahuyuk.

August 1489BCE - Patar grows into a Large Village. Meanwhile, messages from our Envoy in Konya note that the Konyans have turned Antagonistic toward us. I dismiss this out of hand. The Konyans are a weak people, and ready for a real leader. In fact, a Konyan caravan, reputed to be carrying Gems, has been spotted near Troy. Elements of the local army are dispatched to secure these Gems for the good of our nation. Pleased with this windfall, I decree that Reed Brick Makers be actively recruited for Troy. Meanwhile, with the approach of the relief force, our army under the command of General Hattusilis, stationed in Karahuyuk, is ordered south toward the Kilistepan border. I have decided to show the Kilistepan's the true meaning of 'deep dislike'!

September 1489BCE - I order that an Open Cast Copper Mine begin construction in Zeleia. Meanwhile, the foundation of our first Archery Academy is laid in Sardes.

October 1489BCE - I recall our Envoy from Kilistepan in advance of General Hattusilis crossing their border. My Envoy has too much experience to have his head sent back to me on a platter. An Expanded Skirmisher Barracks begins construction in Sarhuyuk, and excavation of a Tin Mine commences in Patar. New Onager Stables are authorized for construction in Parha, and a Basic Smallholding is begun in Yalburt.

December 1489BCE - Karabel expands into a Small Town, and there is much rejoicing. I dispatch my Envoy to the court of the Hittites in order to sound out their stance toward us. Meanwhile, in a move to bolster our frontier, I order the immediate expansion of the forts at Eflatunpinar and Karahuyuk into Medium Forts.

January 1488BCE - The gods smile on us, and the Harvest at the start the year is good. The Open Cast Copper Mine is reported completed in Zeleia, while the Tin Mine begins operations in Patar. Our Envoy arrives in the court of the Hittite, only to find they have a Deep Dislike for us. Odd, considering they were the belligerents when they launched their unprovoked attacks on us a couple of years past. Fortunately, I have a long memory. This information is followed by great news from the battlefield. After a hard fought engagement, Kilistepe falls to General Hattusilis. Kilistepe is absorbed into my enlightened empire.

February 1488BCE - Reed Brickmakers are successfully recruited in Troy. This is followed by the news that our first Archery Academy has opened in Sardes. Yalburt develops into a Basic Smallholding, and General Hattusilis rests his troops in Kilistepe.

March 1488BCE - Following the ancient adage that one can never have enough Building Materials, a Reed Bed is ordered constructed in Kilistepe.

April 1488BCE - An Expanded Skirmisher Barracks opens in Sarhuyuk, while the Onager Stables are completed in Parha. A Herbalist applies to set up business in Parha, while yet another Skirmisher Barracks begins construction in Yalburt.

June 1488BCE - The Reed Bed successfully begins operations in Kilistepe, while the Herbalist establishes himself in Parha. After a well-deserved rest, General Hattusilis marches north toward the southern border of Konya. Meanwhile, two large Hittite armies are reported marching south in the direction of the northern border of Konya. I send out word that I require yet more Reed Brick Makers in Troy, then order the construction of a Shrine in Karabel to show gratitude to the gods for so many years of glory. Finally, I encourage settlers to immigrate to Kilistepe in the hope it develops into a Large Encampment.

July 1488BCE - I receive word that the Skirmisher Barracks is ready in Yalburt. Meanwhile, new methods of medicine aid our Doctors to improve the overall health of my people. A messenger arrives from General Hattusilis informing me that he is in position. This is followed by reports from our scouts that the Hittites wait passively on the northern Konyan border. I recall the Envoy from Konya.

August 1488BCE - With much religious fanfare, the Shrine opens in Karabel. Elsewhere, work in Eflatunpinar and Karahuyuk is completed. They are now Medium Forts. To finish the month, I decree that a Blacksmith establish himself in Sarhuyuk; Patar should prepare to expand into a Basic Smallholding; a Small Training Ground should be established in Parha, and Reed Gatherers are to be located to work in Yalburt.

September 1488BCE - The month begins on a positive note - Kilistepe develops into a Large Encampment. I immediately request that Reed Gatherers join the settlement. This is followed closely by news that General Hattusilis has won a great victory and taken Konya. It is my wish that the Royal Family have their eyes put out, to be followed by banishment into the mountains. My first command in the newly liberated country is the establishment of a Reed Bed. As this rather successful month draws to a close, I dispatch an Envoy to a land known as Carchemesh.

October 1488BCE - I have been informed that we have developed new methods of training that allow the taming and use of camels for warfare. I am curious as to how this will turn out; as everyone knows that camels have a reputation for stubbornness. Elsewhere, a Simple Wood Mill begins construction in Karabel, while Zeleia starts expanding to accommodate Large Copper Mines. Expanded Stables are ordered for Milawanda, and additional Reed brick Makers are requested for Sardes.

November 1488BCE - A small Konyan force - now homeless and no doubt acting in desperation - has attacked Karahuyuk. They are easily defeated, and their heads adorn many pikes along the Royal Roadway. Trivial matters aside, a Basic Smallholding is completed in Patar, while a Small Training ground opens in Parha. I decree that Patar exploit their tin mines, and order Tin Excavations get under way as soon as possible. Meanwhile, I order that Parha establish Stables to supply mounts for our southern frontier.

December 1488BCE - The year finishes with additional Reed Brick Makers established in Troy, and news that a Blacksmith has set up shop in Sarhuyuk. Still, the Hittites remain encamped on their borders...

Part III of the new period
January 1487BCE - The harvest was average, an event that foretold the balance of the year. Reed Gathers were successfully recruited in Yalburt, while a Reed Bed was developed in Konya. As building material is always important to expansion and consolidation, I enticed Reed Brick Makers to settle in Sarhuyuk, and Reed Gatherers to immigrate to Konya.

February 1487BCE - A Simple Wood Mill was completed in Karabel, and a Tin Excavation mine opened in Patar. Elsewhere, Reed Gatherers agreed to settle in Kilistepe. Meanwhile, the Royal Architects laid before me plans to expand the boundaries of my capital in Troy. The population was growing at an alarming rate, and there was little space remaining for the onslaught of newcomers. I agreed to the plans, allowing construction to begin. To cover the expected drain on building materials, I decreed that Reed Gatherers should settle in Patar, and Reed Brick Makers should journey to Yalburt.

March 1487BCE - A Large Copper Mine was successfully opened in Zeleia, while the Stables in Milawanda received a timely expansion. I was informed that we could now build chariots. Kilistepe was encouraged to develop into a Small Village.

April 1487BCE - Reed Brick Makers either settled, or trained, in Sardes. I decreed that additional Reed Brick Makers should take residence there. The first Chariots rolled off the production line. I ordered that they should be dispatched immediately to the Hittite border, where my armies continued to rest and gather.

June 1487BCE - I received word that the construction of new Stables was completed in Parha. Meanwhile, more Reed Gatherers settled in Konya. I was informed that Milawanda required expansion, and directed funds for its immediate construction. Milawanda was important as the source of much of my military needs. Elsewhere, Reed Brick Makers continued to settle in Konya.

July 1487BCE - Continuing with a trend, I ordered more Reed Brick Makers to gather in Sarhuyuk, while sufficient Reed Gatherers took up business in Patar. Next I authorized the addition of a Small Wheat Farm in Patar. After diligent work, Kilistepe expanded into a Small Village, then construction began on a Homestead. Meanwhile the future location of an Irrigated Farm was established in Parha.

August 1487BCE - Reed Brick Makers took up residence in Yalburt, while later during the month a Copper Deposit was discovered between the towns of Eflatunpinar and Karahuyuk. Troops were dispatched to claim it. Meanwhile, a Small Wheat Farm began construction in Yalburt.

September 1487BCE - Oh glorious day. After much work Troy has expanded into a Large Town, while Kilistepe has developed into a Small Town. As a sign of homage to the gods, I decree that a Shrine be erected in Troy. Elsewhere, the foundations for a Cattle Farm are laid in Beycesultan, while a Basic Small Holding is ordered for Kilistepe. Meanwhile, a Gold Deposit is discovered near Konya, and troops are immediately dispatched to recover it.

October 1487BCE - Reed Brick Makers are successfully recruited at Sardes. A Wheat Farm becomes their next project.

November 1487BCE - The holy Shrine is built in Troy. I personally lead the opening ceremonies, humbling myself before the gods. During this period of consolidation, I have been raising troops and sending them to the frontier towns to strengthen the borders and prepare for possible war. During this time, the establishment of centres to produce Building Materials has meant that food production has suffered. No more. I must shift my focus. Therefore, a Small Wheat Farm is ordered built at Patar, and even my capital of Troy establishes the groundwork for an Irrigated Farm. The foundation of a Medium Fort is laid at Sakarya, while the Gold near Konya is recovered.

December 1487BCE - Milawanda expands into a Small Town, and a Small Wheat Farm begins operations in Yalburt. A Basic Small Holding is completed in Kilistepe, while Konya attracts more Reed Brick Makers. A Medium Fort begins construction in Zeleia, and money is apportioned for a Small Wheat Farm in Kilistepe. Gold Ore Gatherers are asked to report to Kale, and the Copper deposit near Eflatunpinar is recovered and returned.

January 1486BCE - So much for my Shrine. Late rains have spoiled some of the harvest. Fortunately, the Irrigated Farm is completed in Parha, while construction of a Homestead is begun in Milawanda.

March 1486BCE - The Homestead is completed in Milawanda, while Kale has successfully attracted professional Gold Ore Gatherer's. A Cattle Farm opens in Beycesultan, and another Cattle Farm begins operation in Sardes. Copper Compounds are ordered for Eflatunpinar and Karahuyuk, while plans are made to expand Konya into a Large Encampment. A caravan of Gems is spotted on the Hittite border, near Sarhuyuk. I decide to risk troops to retrieve it.

April 1486BCE - The Small Wheat Farm begins operation in Kilistepe. Meanwhile, I recall my Envoy to the Hittites. I tell them it is for consultation. During this, I order my troops to move closer to the border. I ask them to take station within one march of the Hittite army that guards the southern border. Beycesultan and Kale are directed to begin construction of Medium Forts. Reed Brick Makers are recruited for Kilistepe. To finish the month, a caravan of Gems are spotted near Kilistepe. Troops are dispatched.

May 1486CE - An Irrigated Farm successfully opens in Troy, while one begins construction in Sardes. Reed Brick Makers are encouraged to travel to Patar. Finally, I set aside money to expand the shrine into a Temple at Troy.

June 1486BCE - Konya expands into a Large Encampment. A Blacksmith is Immediately requested to settle there. A Wood Mill begins construction in Yalburt.

July 1486BCE - A Medium Fort is raised in Sakarya, while a Basic Small Holding is completed in Milawanda. Meanwhile, Large Horse Paddocks are ordered built in Sakarya and Sarhuyuk.

August 1486BCE - A Medium Fort is completed in Zeleia. They begin construction of a Copper Compound. Finally, after months of preparation, General Imbagal, at the head of a veteran army, invades the Hittite nation. They immediately engage a large border army. The omens are good, and victory is ours. Our Skirmishers pin the enemy troops, allowing the chariots and Gish Battle Carts to sweep in from their flank. The Arzawan Empire draws first blood. Meanwhile, seasoned General Hattusilis, commanding the second prong of the invasion, crosses the border and advances on the city of Acemhoyuk.

September 1486BCE - The Temple in Troy is complete. It is magnificent. Elsewhere, Copper Compounds are opened in Eflatunpinar and Karahuyuk, while a Large Wheat Farm begins construction in Troy.

October 1486BCE - A Basic Small Holding is completed in Milawanda, while Reed Brick Makers gather in Kilistepe. A Blacksmith sets up shop in Konya. I dispatch an Envoy to the court of the Arrinans. A Cattle Farm begins construction in Karabel, and a Small Wheat Farm is ordered built in Milawanda. To bring my military production capability closer to the border, I order the construction of Onager Stables in Kilistepe. Great news. General Hattusilis has won a grand victory against a large Hittite army, just outside the walls of Acemhoyuk. I have been informed that he has entered the city in triumph.

November 1486BCE - Large Horse Paddocks are completed in both Sakarya and Sarhuyuk, while an Irrigation Farm opens in Sardes. Reed Brick Makers settle in Patar, and a Wood Mill begins operation in Yalburt. Additional Reed Brick Makers are requested for Patar and Konya is encouraged to develop into a Small Village. Meanwhile, a small Hittite army marches on Acemhoyuk, while a Larger army moves north toward the border town of Sarhoyuk.

December 1486BCE - Medium Forts are built in Kale and Beycesultan. My Envoy arrives in Arrinan to find their court harbouring a deep dislike for the Arzawan people. Tough darts, I say. A Simple Shaft Gold Mine begins excavation in Kale, and a Large Wood Mill is ordered built in Yalburt. Spies report that the people of Pala may be moving on Sakarya, my northern most city. Though it is fully garrisoned, I order the raising of additional troops...
