submarine problem

Post by jad43 »

I have noticed in playing that submarines can not attack other submarines.
That is not very realistic as occassionaly U boats and allied subs did attack each other.
I do not believe it would be a difficult software fix to allow subs to attack each other.
Please let me know if this issue gets fixed. thanks

That's historically correct:
1945 February 6- Royal Navy submarine Venturer becomes the only submarine to sink another submarine while they were both submerged when she sinks U-864 off Norway.

WWII submarines were designed as anti-shipping platforms. The limits of technology did not make them very effective in sub-on-sub action, either surfaced or submerged. While there were limited engagements of sub-on-sub both in the west and in the Pacific, it's very rare given the totality of combat involved.

I think the current game has it correct to balance things both for the game and historically. And in the game, subs are very vulnerable to tactical air; they don't pose a real menace to you if you allocate a Stuka or similar to them.

But I am not an apologist; there are some really serious errors with the naval component, I do believe. But this is not one of them. Things that are way off are like:

Light cruisers classed as "capital ships"
Light cruisers having the same range as heavy cruisersG
Battleships and heavy cruisers having only marginally better AD than DD's and CL's.
The naval attack rating of strategic bombers (in Billy Mitchell or Giulio Douhet's dreams!)

The naval component appears to only be included in order to facilitate land combat, not to be totally accurate. Which is ok; there are other games for that if it is a deep interest.
