Derby World Teams 6/7 October 2012 - Players needed
We're just trying to finalise things for this. I would really like to get an even number of teams so we don't have to have any byes and for that I need some extra players.
If you would like to play please get in touch by PM and let me know which period interests you most. I can help with armies if necessary.
I need to get this sorted by this Friday, 14th September.
Cheers,
Kevin

I spoke too soon
I'm now back in the position of having odd numbers. Anyone interested please get in touch.

The current position is that we have 7 teams, so if you want to play, or know anyone who might, please get in touch.
If we cannot find extra players we'll have to have a Bye each round. In individual tournaments these are normally scored at 20 points. However, given the team nature of this competition, I'm concerned that adding 60 points to a team may unduly skew things. I'd be grateful for any suggestions for better ways to resolve this if we have to.
Cheers,
Kevin

If you've 6 teams playing and 1 getting a bye, then perhaps give the bye team the average score of the other 6 in that round?

Not sure that works as mathmetically it will always be between 10 (because two players score 20 between them) or it could in theory go up to 12.5 if all other games get a positive result. The only variable will be how many other players win. Then you have to decide do you round up or down as that could only give you scores of 10, 11, 12 or 13 - more probably 11 if half the other games get a result...
Two other options are:-
1. All players getting a bye will score 10 points (this is what we did at Campaign)
2. Players get the average of the winning scores - this will probably mean that as the Swiss system works out the average will get less in the later games as the games get tighter!)
My preference is for every bye player to get the same but 10 seems quite low. Maybe 13 is a better "bye" score.
Let's keep our fingers crossed for 1 more team!

Yes, I agree with Don that the average of all scores is a very narrow range. I've also been in touch with Marc who runs the Fog AM competition, and his solution is to score 10 for the players who receive byes for the purpose of the draw, then replace this with the average of their other scores at the end, but with a minimum of 10 for the bye round. I'd forgotten (it was a long time ago) that I'd written this into the playing conditions for any no-show type byes, but it sounds like a fair method that won't skew the results. Unless anyone can think of any obvious flaws, this is what I'll go with, unless 3 more players appear before tomorrow.
