Post by madaxeman »

6 games, more than 10,000 words, over 250 pictures in the epic widescreen version of Britcon 2012, with 6 separate reports as the Thirty Years War French (and Geermans, and Dootch) take on all comers (most of whom turn out to be Swedish).

See how the latest version of Frenchmen with Pikes and guns works

- Game 1 Thirty Years' War French, German and Dutch vs Thirty Years' War French
- Game 2 Thirty Years' War French, German and Dutch vs Early TYW Swedish
- Game 3 Thirty Years' War French, German and Dutch vs TYW German Catholic
- Game 4 Thirty Years' War French, German and Dutch vs Later Swedish
- Game 5 Thirty Years' War French, German and Dutch vs Early TYW Swedish
- Game 6 Thirty Years' War French, German and Dutch vs Imperial Spanish

Tim

Glad to see you kept up your Britcon tradition of rolling 1s for death rolls in the first game... That is how to make artillery effective...

Great reports, much to enjoy, makes me even sader that I was not able to be there this time.

Regards
Tim

Oh and losing a French Pike and Shot BG to a Swedish Commanded Shot BG two years in a row in the same comp must be some sort of record...

Pick one or more from:

They are the most commonly owned armies
They have a lot of flexibility in their composition so can be configured to confidently take on a wide range of opponents
In an open competition they are arguably the best bet
Swedes get a +2 at impact which is almost unique so they are popular
Regimental gun markers are really cool so using armies who can take them is a good way to get nice toys on table

And then add in:

The winner used Sudanese ....

Which in that Army composition was a perfect foil for TYW Armies

Sudanese? Is that in "Cities of Gold"? I don't have that one. How was that a perfect foil?

John's posted his list elsewhere on the forum, but in essence he took 4 BGs of allied camels (lance and sword), used them as a block, disordered the TYW mounted so pistols didn't count, then ganged up bow armed warrior units (7BGs I think) on the 6 strong P&S and had a number of lance armed LH that hung about looking for flanks of already unsteady TYW mounted.

I'd agree with him that it would probably not work as effectively next time out, but it certainly worked well this time.

I see. I once ran into Qing Chinese in a similar way.

"Surprise! you've never played this obscure army before" lists seem to be the new tournament thing. Yet another reason for theme tournaments.
