Foot in the DMZ

Post by ravenflight »

Hi All,

Apart from the fact that foot get a few minus' for being in the 12" location of doom, is there any real problem? Do people move foot into that area during the game to take on cavalry?

I'm trying to work out whether I'm best to use my foot to 'attack' there (I know foot can't charge without a test, but they can move aggressively and taunt the enemy) or delay with my 'inferior' cavalry. I'm trying to use Louis XIV.

I find it generally a bad thing. Ironically it's not so bad if you are facing all horse. The kicker is if you face foot and horse and you end up in a fire fight with the enemy foot you end up on a -poa.

I had this a lot with the pirates. I'd normally have as many, if not more bgs, but if I wanted to gain local superiority and strayed in the 12" zone then I'd end up shooting on a -

Also warriors REALLY don't like it out there

Yes, I was thinking of the Louis XIV, trying to work out a mechanism to help my 'poor horsies'.

Incidentally, I just played a game, and had a success against Heavily Armoured and Armoured Horse. Managed to get into a situation where I was double overlapped on the Horse and so that made it 'about even' in the melee. It's always hard to work out in a 'one game' situ, but I'm less 'the fall is skying' now.

Kiels and Pike are happy over there especially since they bump into mounted.

For awhile I commanded out the shot from two units giving me an 8 shot and 4 pike. The 4 pike i would deploy on the edge of the 12 MU zone and move right in to enemy mounted they really got flumoxed by that. Then someone rolled up with reiters and shot me up. But still handy.

I use mostley Infantry and will quiet often put infantry on the flank especaiily if only against cavalry, and those that cannot shoot. I like to use superiors as they get rerolls for he shooting and any tests. Also as I have Regimental guns, then I am hitting the Cavalry on 5's for the muskets and 4 for the gun, and three rolls at long range, goes to 4 at short age (musket*). So you find the cavalry has too charge or die to shooting. Also you can quiet often catch the cavalry against the board edge which makes them in real problems.

If against Dragoons you usually loose due to the shooting. Against Sup Bow, sw cavalry you will need support and generals or will lose cohesion quickly.

You sure about those factors?

Nearest rank of target is:

Any mounted troops -
Foot battle troops with threatened flank -

So, aren't you at --?

No, because the - for shooting with threatened flank only counts vs foot.

(The - POA vs mounted effectively already takes into account the need for foot to shelter near the pikes which is the rationale for the - vs foot when flank threatened).

Thanks Richard.

Are Regimental Guns considered 'battle troops' if attached to 'battle troops'? I.e. do they take a -ve hit?

Page 25, Battle Troops

any troops other than light troops
mixed battle groups partly of light foot

As Regimental Guns are not listed under Light Troops on page 24 and even if they were...

The Gun gets a -ve for flank but not for mtd, one is before the 0 listed for guns, one is after the 0, or thats how I think its supposed to work. Of course it doesn't get the -ve for the flank when shooting mtd as thats only against foot, which includes dragoons and Artillery. Remember Artillery also suffered from threatened flank as a foot battle troop, most people forget this one, so no placing 6" from any long edge or -ve for shooting. Also mtd will give the guns a minus but only for shooting foot!
