Support shooting - which table ?

Post by zocco »

Hopefully an easy question for veteran players.

When calculating hits from support shooting which table should you use - 'shooting' (where for example with a -- POA you need to roll a 6 to score a hit) or 'close combat' ( where with a -- POA you need to roll a 5 or 6 to score a hit) ? I've always used the shooting table but now I'm wondering if that is in fact correct (given its close combat with shooting POA's). Also is there an FAQ or such on this ?

cheers

Hi Zocco

It is the shooting table with the additional minus for shooting in impact phase.

Top of page 99, 2nd bullet: "The dice scores required to hit are as per shooting." And the 1st bullet on that page says to use the shooting POAs.

Ah yes. Thanks for the replies and clearing that one up.

Yes I did remember the minus for support shooting at least - a curse for my LF when shooting at catapharacts on impact ( a 6 to score :( ) but in V2 it will be no more I gather. Then it may well be a case of Chinese anyone ?

Wow! Holding a line with LF against cataphracts is beyond gutsy. My LF would be running like H-E-Double Toothpick.

Since LF support shooting only occurs when there are non-LF in the unit, I suspect it's not as brave as you think. However; I do sometimes try and stand with LF only units, often with an IC with them to encourage it. This is usually in the latter part of games, where you just need a sacrificial unit to stand in the way of a charge to stop the chargers interfering with other BGs. I did it at the weekend with LF bow against superior armourde legionaries.

It's a good tactic against mounted as few players expect it and with an IC and rear support the LF often remain steady so the mounted may break off and present their flank to a 'proper' unit. It is not historical, of course!

I got the impression he was hoping to beat the cataphracts with his LF. Throwing in a unit to delay the enemy while you overwhelm him in another part of the battlefield can be extremely effective. I don't think you are hoping they will win, rather the hope is that they delay the enemy long enough.

BTW, thanks for the comment:

It had slipped my mind. Good review.
