Dash to the wire

Post by balone »

Has anybody tried to take Tobruk in the Dash to the wire scenario.
Should I bother or just concentrate on the supply dumps. Any help
would be greatly appreciated.

Personal view is to avoid it like the plague! It is just too tough IMO, you'll have too many units tied up in what is an offensive that would have very little chance of success. The garrison doesnt seem to want to come out and play, so it is best to leave them in situ to work on their sun tans.

Thanks, I think I'll take your advise and let them bake in the sun.
It's just that there's so little prestige I want to explore all possibilities.
Attacking Tobruk sounds like it would be a drain on prestige. As they say
"let sleeping dogs lie"

oddly enough you can often get prestige by letting them capture your cities/airfileds and then taking them back - once.

There are some nasty units within the Tobruk perimeter--I nudged them when I played on FM and very quickly realized that this was a very bad idea. Might be doable on an easier setting, or if unit preservation is not an issue. Scouring the desert to the south for airplane hangars is a better use of available units.

Hmmm, there are a couple of cities/airfields that only have a single
English unit beside it. Sounds promising. Thx

Kind of like throwing stones at a hornets nest?

During beta testing, I screwed around with taking Tobruk. However, I used the all eqp cheat code, so I had Tiger II's plowing over the defensive positions. I wanted to see what happened (any bonus eqp, but nothing. Stick to the script in the scenario and destroy the supply dumps. This will take enough of your time and resources.

I was fortunate enough to breach the east side of the city. With minimal losses just to test the waters.

As I entered the city I began to recieve heavy losses.

I pulled out my troops, ended the scenario with a Decicive Victory and called it a day.

Here I though I might get a Uber Unit, I gave up on the hangars. I'll know next time.

You have to earmark specific units for this mission, dash for the designated deployment zone RIGHT AWAY, concentrate at least four (if memory serves) units there at once, and then across the wire and hunt. I used four tanks and two recon units, supported by a fighter and tac bomber. Do not let the units earmarked for the supply dumps be distracted by the enemy units in your rear advancing on Tobruk, or you will run out of time (I made this mistake the first time I played the scenario). Your other units can deal with them. Once you have destroyed three supply dumps, get your surviving units the *@#! out of there and send them to hunt for hangars in the southern desert.
