Renaissance Gendarmes - avg vs sup

Post by footslogger »

Has anyone worked out whether 6 average gendarmes are about the equal of 4 superior? They cost about the same (90 vs 84). I know in games it's tough to get that kind of a one-on-one matchup, but theoretically speaking....

I've found it doesn't make much of a difference. Out of period, and facing anything on a horse but other Gendarmes (except, oddly enough, Impact Mounted, against which your Gendarmes have the upper hand), Gendarmes are dead men riding. Average in BGs of 6 last a littel longer, but they are just as futile in the end. I once had a 6-base BG of average Italian Gendarmes fighting a 2-base BG of unarmorored Jacobin pistoleers. I was fragged at impact, broken in melee. Unbelievabley bad dice helped, but the factors were against me in both phases.

Hmm, so taking a Hugenot army with Gendarmes to an open tournament is not a clever idea then :?

If you have to have Gendarmes out of period, I'd suggest taking the 4 and chuck them behind your infantry as supports, 4 average @ 48pts in line can support a lot of troops.

A wise plan to keep them in reserve. Also the sudden intervention of Gendarmes late in the game can be devastating to shotup units.
Clear the battlefield and let me see
All the profit from our victory.
