While we wait for Unity and Wolves ...

Post by TheGrayMouser »

Was just reading some old posts where players were discussing whether flank charges should be as devastating as rear charges, and i recalled this pretty cool website loaded with goodies

http://www.garyb.0catch.com/site_map.html
(specifically the article on the right titled "cavalry charging infantry")

Gives a pretty good argument ( with pictures and math as backup!) that flank charges wernt particulary useful ( at least against a Roman army)

I then recalled a really nice website that I believe old_warrior orginally posted a link to, but was lost when Slitherine was having those server crashes and entire threads were lost.
http://www.classicalfencing.com/articles/shock.php

The above gives a nice look at cavalry shock combat and explains how it was the saddle and the size and strength of the HUMAN that mattered and not stirrups or the mass of the horse. My favourite line " its better to face ( in lancer to lancer shock combat) a small man on a big horse than a big man on a small horse"

Good reads , especially with beer.

Both sites are known to me, and both are very interesting.

The Roman Army Model one doesn't need any kind of recommendation, just go and read for yourselves. But again, you'd better have a solid background (at least Delbruck) before really understanding the the whole value of that model.

Regarding the second one, it's one of the best statements we can have about the possibility of the mounted charges (one of the most debated topics ancient warfare related), and that straight from the mouth of a man doing it :)
