Any tips on using chariots?

Post by the_iron_duke »

Any tips on using chariots (heavy, light, scythed)? The only historical tactical advice I can find is that scythed chariots were good against poor quality troops (and I'm not sure if that's reflected in FoG).

Hold on very tightly to the reins and try not to go over any rocks. :D

Do they have any strengths or weaknesses against any particular troops? In what way do they function differently than cavalry in FoG?

All chariots ignore armor. They are best used against Impact infantry(if you have Light-spear Heavy Chariots, they're great against Impact Heavy Foot, especially romans). Light chariots are much like LS cavalry, except worse in combat usually, you should use them to rear charge and annoy the enemy, and charge MF.

Bow chariots are a wild card, since they might charge when you just want to use the bows, and their shooting is worse than horse archers. Personally I prefer the LS chariots to them, they're even cheaper.

Chariots can be useful against Cataprachts(or Knights if you play cross-book), since after charge, they're equal(even though the enemy might be heavily armored). Problem is, they're worse at charging(but since heavy chariots are generally cheaper than Catapracts...)

Thanks Tiavals, that's some useful information and should help me to utilise my chariots more effectively in future battles! (*Doffs cap*)

There is a section on chariots in the FOG Wiki, but it is incomplete. I would have a go at finishing it off but I know more about "bullock carts" than I do about chariots, to be honest (hence my ludicrously unhelpful post earlier in the thread  ). Maybe Tiavals, or someone else, might like to finish off this section?

You provided the fundamentals while Tiavals filled in the details. I forgot there was a wiki page on chariots, although it only covers lights. What about the rare scythed chariots - novelty filler or harbingers of doom?
