650 is good. 3.5 hours is too long for a tournament game. If you had even as small as 12 players, how would anything get settled?Andy1972 wrote:Having played in FOG:A tourneys at 900.points and FOG:R at 800 points, 3.5 hrs works fine up get a battle settled.. For FOG:N.. 1000 points is too much and 650 is too small. I like 850-900 points.. Though the 650 would be good for a beginners tourney. 2 hour rounds maybe.

Also, the book says 650 or 800, so everybody's gonna be building their armies by what the book says. How are they supposed to know that the book says is no longer the norm.
Re: 800 or 1000
Besides go back and read the six million other reasons why anything over 800 will kill the game as far as tournies go.

Re: 800 or 1000
We had a tournament here in Auckland, New Zealand in June, using 800 point armies, four x 4 hour rounds.
27 games were played. From memory there were 6 time-out draws and 21 results. Fastest games that got a result were about 2 hours, most of the rest finished in 3 - 3.5 hours.
A couple of the draws were of the 'we will; never get a result' type. The remainder however were one side clinging on for dear life while the other desperately tried to inflict the knock-out blow.
Based on the two tournaments we have held so far, 800 points and 4 hour rounds works for me. I guess you could move to 3.5 hour rounds and try to get 3 rounds in each day, however this may be a bit intense.
Cheers

Re: 800 or 1000
All the ancient tournies that I have ever been in over the last 14yrs are 3.5 hour rounds.. That's with the FOG games and DBM.. At the IWF in 2009 they had 6 games over 3 days.. 2 each day.. A little too much for me, but it had to.be worth while for everyone traveling from all over the world to play. I know we had 50 FOG players and quite a few other people playing other games. So the 3 games in.a day format is nice, so.you can spend the other days of the con doing other stuff. You also have to remember alot of FOGN players play.the other FOG games.. So you don't want to water down the game pool by playing the same day as an another fog tourney.

If I want a quick playing set of rules, I play DBA or big battle DBA... I also have a Napoelonic version of them:) When I want a more serious game, I play FOG.

It's not just too much for you, it's too much for anybody and it's exactly whyAndy1972 wrote:All the ancient tournies that I have ever been in over the last 14yrs are 3.5 hour rounds.. A) there aren't that many ancients tournaments these days (only the big conventions have them
and
B) everybody is switching to impetus
The point in your last sentence is one I didn't think of, but it's another good reason to keep it at 650 for sure. Most conventions are only 3 days, so how are you gonna work that out? 5 or 6 games in 1 day is better, that way you can actually do other things at a convention rather than being glued to a single tourney
Re: 800 or 1000
Well that's good, just play FOGN tournaments at 650 and make do without that brigade of cuirassiers. It's just as serious and more of a challengeAndy1972 wrote:If I want a quick playing set of rules, I play DBA or big battle DBA... Re: 800 or 1000
Even 800 is fine. The call for 850-900 is basically people that can't fudge a list just right wanting that extra 50/100 points. 99% of historical generals never had just right.

Re: 800 or 1000
The extra points here up to 1000 is just to fill up a 4' x 8' table a bit more. Otherwise we'd go down to 4' x 6'. It has nothing to do with wanting that extra goodie or being unable to choose. Even at 1000 you can't get all the goodies!
Re: 800 or 1000
If you want to fill up the table with a little more and that's you style, than perhaps the right army to choose would be neopolitans or Spanish.Blathergut wrote:The extra points here up to 1000 is just to fill up a 4' x 8' table a bit more. Re: 800 or 1000
We found ut the 1000 on a 4 X 6 works right . Might seem crowded but it works .
If interested we plan a tournament end of january in brussels , one day tournament ( 800 or 650 ) and a big battle the day after

Re: 800 or 1000
I have no issue playing 3.5-4 hrs rounds.. That is a normal tourney round game.. The issue was 6 games.. For me 3-4 games for a tourney is what I can handle.. 650 points like I said would be a good way to introduce people into the game.. Or if you were short on Time.. Like Thursdays at Historicon. 3 2.5 hour rounds would be great.. Now for a regular tourney, 800-900 points.. Have you ever played in a tournament besides FOW?

Re: 800 or 1000
Yes, plenty and there is a reason FOW enjoys wild popularity. 650 - 800 should be the standard tourney size and not 3 hour rounds which are boring. I don't want to watch a guy set up 900 or 1000 points of minis for 30 minutes, wait another 30 minutes while he moves his stuff around. Not to mention when I go to a con I want to explore, not spend 3 days glued to the same table. The other point is if you have 20 players that play only 3 games, nothing at all gets decided. You might as well play pick up games.
You keep it over two hours, another game will replace it fast.

Re: 800 or 1000
Each round you score points, I don't think I have seen a tie and the end of a 3 round tourney.. 6 games over 3 days would not happen at a normal Con.. That's the IWF.. Basically at 3 day Con.. You will have one day for FOgA, next FOGR.. Then a day for FOGN.. That way you do not dillute your.players.

Re: 800 or 1000
Well, so you score points.....all that settles is who has more points, not who the best general is. You can get a mediocre player against three noobs running a Chinese fire drill scoring way more than players who would normally clean his clock. If your score is determined by who you are and who you beat, then you get just a prestige contest where nobody else has a chance.
The best way to have a tourney in anything is pool play and then a playoff bracket to settle it. One of the major gripes I've had about the hobby for years.
Let's say you have 20 players..... Break it into for pools of five, everybody plays four hour and a half games on day 1 and the pool champions do a bracket the next day. Victory points are just tie breakers in pool play.
16 players is a game less, 12 a game less than that and ten and under you only need two pools.
That's fast, efficient, fun and less bulky. It actually determines something.

Re: 800 or 1000
800 points gives a good size army for most list, and after britcon I would say 800 is a good size for a tournment for a Bricon size event any bigger and games would not be finishing.
Re: 800 or 1000
Please remember : the question was not "turnament minded" but" game minded" . Tournaments are a very different thing .
