"placement terrain "slide"

Post by hazelbark »

When you roll a "5" for terrain movement and you can "slide" or pivot the piece.

I've always assumed "slide" meant you cannot leap pieces.

But others have suggested that as long as you clear the piece and otherwise comply your "slide" can leap over pieces.

I have not looked up this in the rule book but the question arose in another FOG rule book. So going back to this version i was curious if it was different, but it appear not.

Village (4MU wide in the direction that matters)
(4mu away required from placement)
A forest (4 MU wide in the idiretion that matters)

So can you slide the forest through the village sine it will clear it with its 12 MU slide?

The terrain pieces can't be 6x4 as the terrain size rule says "A 4 x 6 MU rectangle can be fitted entirely within its footprint". The definition of 'within' - "At or closer than" - does not seem relevant here. Or at least I can't make sense of it. So I think you terrain is actually a little bigger than4MU wide, so the slide is not long enough to clear the other terrain.

So you appear to agree that in principle terrain can be slid through another piece of terrain (dimensions permitting).

According to P141 the only restrictions are that you cannot slide it off table or to overlap another piece. I think that allows you to move it though an intervening piece, of course providing the dimensions allowed it. I suspect its nore likely that you could move a piece over a corner or end of another feature rather than entirely though it though.

Interesting question - seems strange to me now that it has never seemed to have come up in a game I've played!

My thought would be that if you can't "jump" another piece, the rules would explicitly say that. Although the use of the word "slide" rather than simply move is curious, I wouldn't want to read too much into it. My guess would be that it's used to imply that you can move the terrain piece without rotating it, flipping it over, etc.

True. The other FOG rule has things allowed to start closer than 4 MU and things that are les than 4 MU wide. And other rule sets have roads coming in earlier that provoked the possiblity far more than in AM.

It is not of great significance, but was more curious. I just assumed "slide" did not mean hover, but I based that on nothing.
