Ancient Spanish: Viable?
I'm new to FoG and for my first army I've narrowed it down to either Aragonese or Later Medieval German. However, I have a thing for falcata's and would certainly love to paint some Scutarii models... So basically I'm wondering if an ancient Spanish army would get clobbered vs medieval armies like HYW English for example. From reading through the rulebook once over my impression is that even if I use terrain and clever manouevres, the abundance of drilled heavy foot and knightly lancers will basically ensure that I'll be steamrolled in the melee phase (Iberian scutarii being MF). Also if I'm reading the army list correctly I can only have one BG of superior cavalry, with the rest being average LH. If this is indeed the case I'll go with a medieval army for now, but if anyone has experience with an ancient Spanish Army I'd love to hear their opinion...

Not at all easy to use even in period.
Against later medieval armies you would basically be forced to hide in terrain for the whole game in order to get a 0-0 draw

Ultimately, it's impossible to say until the dust settles on the new V2 rules.LongHairedGerman wrote:I'm new to FoG and for my first army I've narrowed it down to either Aragonese or Later Medieval German. In V1, I'd happily take you on with nearly anything, fairly sure of victory
No, not really, but there are a lot of more competitive armies out there and you may find yourself clobbered. For example, against Romans (even with double the points cost) they'll go through you like your not there. Heavier medieval types will take a little longer (3 turns instead of 1). You're not quick enough to make use of your extra manpower in that time (by flanking).
That said, all is going to change with V2, so just be patient and let people sort out what's going to happen and they'll be able to give you a better answer.
