Partial Steep Hill "trick"

Post by hazelbark »

Note that steep hills can be partially steep.

So you make a 1 MU band on one side of the hill steep. Then have a gentle hill slope continuing up wth enough room for a full base, maybe even base at an angle. Then the ridgeline. And gentle on the back slope.

So if the hill comes down in the correct place and doesn't get moved it basically makes it exeedingly difficult to assault. But you can still easily move troops to the top to fire down.

Whilst I'm sure this can be a pain the first time it happens to you (and for that reason its good to warn people), in practice I don't think its a huge problem. Its exactly the type of situation in which light infantry in skirmish formation earn their keep. I'll leave you to work out the POAs and various tactics and counter tactics, but IMO if you use line infantry to defend a partially steep hill you may as well post a sign "saying light infantry target here" and if you use light infantry to defend it, there isn't much advantage in the hill being partially steep, rather than just steep all round.

ps: It's also worth noting that artillery behind the crest of a hill can only fire over the crest at close range.

Also, while the enemy can't easily attack you, the steep slope makes it harder for the defenders to come off the hill if the enemy ignore you and go somewhere else.
