Flank Charges ..... Or Not

Post by dave_r »

In a game last night I had one BG of 4 bases of heavy foot in a single element wide column to their left was a BG of 8 bases of Medium Foot Longbowmen.

My opponent hit the longbowmen in the front and flank. Fairly quickly afterwards the longbowmen broke and the two enemy BG's pursued. This left them in the following situation (I hope this works) {mod: It nearly worked, I have tidied it up - Hammy}

Code: Select all

AAAAAAAA
AAAAAAAA
         CC
     BB  CC
     BB  CC
     BB  CC
     BB
Where A is facing Down and B is facing Right (both enemy BGs) and C is facing upwards (My BG)

C became disrupted at the sight of the longbowmen breaking so I move a general and attempted to bolster them. It didn't work. So in my turn I took a Manoever Test and failed that as well.

But because I had a general with them I was able to wheel and move short, so I wheeled the front element so that it was one milimeter from A's flank and stopped there.

I was still marginally in front of B with the now kinked column. However when B charged it did not count as a flank charge because of the following:
The charging battle group starts with at least one base entirely behind a straight line extending the front edge of the enemy battle group. If the enemy battle group has some files stepped forward, its front edge is taken as the front edge of the file on the flank charged. If the enemy battle group is facing in more than one direction, it has more than one front edge for this purpose – the above requirement must be satisfied for all of them.
My opponent and Hammy regarded this as prime gorgonzola. I thought it was a brilliant mvoe 8)

The problem is really charging the flank of a single element column that has a kink. As far as we could see the column must count as facing in more than one direction or facing in the direction of the front element. Neither of these would allow the flank charge....

Odd one really
