Adding new units / support units

Post by Crizz »

Hello everyone! I really love this game but miss some units or features. So I've already started to mod this game.
Since the game is scaled at corps level, specialised units could be added like 'Commanders' to make a corps more powerful in a specific situation. Heavy tank corps were planned (this unit is still present within some files) but locked. Historically heavy tanks were attached to divisions or corps in seperate tank battalions, so let's add them like Commanders - similiar to the game Hearts of Iron.
For instance reaching tech level 3 makes heavy tanks available for purchase that can be added to a corps boosting its attack and defend stats. This battalion could be reattached to another corps if you wish. Beside heavy tanks these supporting units could be self-propelled artillery, rocket-artillery, tankhunters, engineers, marines, paras, amphibious tanks or anti-air units.
With the ability from patch 1.04 to name your corps this feature would add a lot of depth to the game.
Currently I could add a named tank battalion (like 501st or 502nd Heavy Tank Battalion) to a corps like a commander but this corps loses the ability to add a commander and its availability is also possible in 1939 scenario. So I'm not fully satisfied with this workaround.
For now I've mainly modded some unit graphics and tweaked unit appearances (no Maus or JS III, Panther before Tiger, Hurricane before Spitfire, no UK tanks in US army, no german fighters like Me262 for Italy ...) and added two commanders, all work in progress and much more to be done -> see pix below

Greetings and thanks for this great game, Crizz

Good work and nice ideas. I'm not sure they are ideas we can retro fit though though so we'd need to think long and hard about them.

Thanks for your feedback!
I'm glad you like the ideas, I hope they can be possible someday.
In the meantime I could find again time to edit some unit graphics. As I've deleted the 'Maus' I filled the gap at tech level 1 with a PzIVf.

The Kingtiger with a longer barrel (unfortunately not long enough, but the maximum possible if you don't want to reduce the overall image of the tank) and sharper markings on the turret. All other 'shorties' will follow.
top = new / bottom = default

In the next days I'll try to add a T-34/85 straight from a digital photo of a 1:72 model.

Great work Crizz. :)

Will it also be possible to to change the British and US images so the British have REAL British and the US real US images. It's strange to see the US player start with e. g. Spitfire fighters with the British circle symbol instead of the US star symbol. USA and Britain share common unit images.

Yes, Stauffenberg, this can be simply done be replacing & renaming the unit images at first.
Look at the top two pics in my first post - they show the recent lineup for US and British army in my mod. You can view the lineup at your PC by modifying the settings.txt (DEBUG_SHOW_ALL_TECH_LEVELS 1) and scroll over the Atlantic Ocean.
Currently there's only one US fighter image for all tech levels, so other variants for different tech levels need to be done, either by retexturing them like my shermans in the top picture or by making completely new images. Same goes for bombers. Since there is no single US Tactical bomber available by default, they need to be done from scratch.
At this time also French and Italian tanks or planes are represented by only one unit image - so there's a lot of work waiting.

If you have graphics skill and can get us some graphics for neutrals and/or USA/UK split, that would be fantastic! I think they are split in the game, we just need the graphics to put in and replace the images.

T-34/85 preview

Post by Crizz »

I just have imported my first completely new unit, a T-34/85, and want to give you a preview. This tank is for tech level 4, JS-II moves to tech level 5 and JS-III is out of my game. I'll probably tweak the graphics a little bit further before uploading them.
The next unit will be a M4A3E8, so stay tuned :D

Crizz - any way you can send me the graphics? We may also be able to incorporate them into the game.

Unfortunately not, 'cause we are relocating to a nearby small town. It happened really fast, so I'm very busy with that. It will take some more weeks ...
I'll post any news as soon as I have more time for the tanks :)
