Bonus Unit
In the unlikely event I win the pbi roll, can I choose the 40pt bonus unit even if I have maxed out the amount normally allowed in the list ?

Yes you can, that is the awesome reward you get for out rolling your opponent so badly. Good luck on the die roll.

Re: Bonus Unit
The army list maxima are not mentioned where the bonus units are discussed on page 94, so it appears that having more than the maximum number of certain troops as bonus units isn't ruled out. But that might give us rather unhistoric armies
Perhaps another one for the errata, "The extra unit(s) can be of any type or size, but must not exceed 40pts in value **nor exceed the allowed maximum in the army lists**."

Quid if there are no units left of 40pts ?Philip wrote:The army list maxima are not mentioned where the bonus units are discussed on page 94, so it appears that having more than the maximum number of certain troops as bonus units isn't ruled out. But that might give us rather unhistoric armies![]()

I don't think 1 extra unit (occasionally) will lead automatically to unhistoric armies, this bonus unit will probably be a stray unit form another corps.
Maybe it could be also an allied unit, is this allowed (even if you have not taken any in your army list ?).
Don't restrict the bonus too much please, otherwise it will be less rewarding, some extra spice is nice !

Re: Bonus Unit
With my imperial guard list I'll be pushed to find a unit for <= 40 pts
as I've taken the port. Average/drilled lancers already

Re: Bonus Unit
Well, if that is so, you can instead buy 2 bases to add to a small unit to make it a large unit.
That could be scary.

Re: Bonus Unit
I believe the rules state the extra 40 points are from the army reserve, so exceeding your maxima in your list is not a problem, they are from an entirely different corps and are temporarily assigned to your corps due to outstanding actions in out scouting your enemy, or something along those lines.

Re: Bonus Unit
At some stage I recall Terry confirming that the free unit had to come from allowable maximums in your list
... although that may have been during playtesting so might not apply to the published rules.
Cheers

Re: Bonus Unit
He did say the extra unit had to come from the existing list maximums. See

Re: Bonus Unit
missed that one. In the original Austrian list it stated you could take a grenadier unit as your bonus unit, which would have exceeded the maximum for them, guess that was what threw me off.
Re: Bonus Unit
Your final list must be legal within the maximums laid down for the units in it. It must also obey all other restricitions of the list.
The unit can be any infantry or cavalry unit permitted in the list, and can include an attachment.
You cannot change a non-mixed division into a mixed division.
The only exception to the above, is that if the army list does not contain ANY bases of less than 10 points then a bases 2 bases of no more than 20prs each may be selected to change any small unit to a large unit - regardless of other restrictions on composition, unit size and maximums in the list.
