I got it. Is there any use for fame in the demo except for healing hurt units? I dunno, but it seems awfully useless compared to denarii. Also, is there any possibility of a variable reward for a scenario? Like routing them in half the given time gets you an extra 300 denarrii?
Also, do the genrerals have to be some damn hard to kill? The silly things are usually the last guys left, and result in 20 guys piling on him- and still not taking him out

Fame is like score. The fame you earn depends on the difficulty setting you are using & the base fame for the map. The idea is to play through and maximise the fame you have at the end of the demo/game. The more men you lose, the more fame you'll use up replacing them, so less casulaties is a higher score.
Generals are very tough at the start but once you get some better units they drop quite quickly so must be protected.
The Celtic campaign is not available in the demo. I guess it should have been more specific about that. If you want a challenge, play through again on the harder setting - its much more fun

Played around with the demo for a short bit last night and really liked the new tactical battle engine. It is such a step up from previous Slitherine games. Adding this new battle engine to Slitherine's already superb strategic gameplay of the previous games will make for a spectacular game with Legion II. Will Legion II have any of the RPG elements of Arena? I guess buildings will take over much of the functions but what about unit appearance? I will probably get Arena; though I am hesitant because of no strategic map play, but Legion II is a definite buy.

I tried abit of the Tutorial lastnight; sofar, I like what I see.
Hopefully, I'll be able to give the demo a real workout soon.
One thing though, maybe its just on my system.
When I click to start Arena, and the Box comes up; for ALL the options (choices), no text appears for each choice.
So, for example, you can't instantly tell where to click for Start Game, Exit, ReadMe, etc.
Not a real big deal, but I thought I'd mention it; I did figure what each choice was, by trial, and error.

Thanks for your reply, Pip.pipfromslitherine wrote:That really is odd! Can you let us know what version of windows you have, and any other system specs you have to hand. It would be good if we can try and work out a fix for you (and anyone else who may see the problem).
Cheers
Pip
I'll start a thread in the Tech Support area; a more appropriate place I think.
Thankyou, Rep.

I must say I'm impressed with Slitherine's work, the demo shows great promise:
- Nice music (I couldn't say that for previous slitherine's efforts
)
- Nice graphics (well, I like it. I suposse that Quake IV will have better graphics, but they're still good. Some people are moaning about them, but I really like)
- Adiction, I played non stop until I finished it. They're just a bunch of battles, but I really wanted to know how could I improve my soldiers for the next challenge: should I add anti-cavalry knowing that in the next scenario it might be no cavalry at all...or only cavalry?
- Nice intro and nice voices (couldn't say that for blah,blah,blah...)
- Clean and intuitive interface (or that's what I thought, maybe because I played Spartan first...)
- Good performance in my PC: no freezes, no slowdowns...but small battles still: I'll wait for bigger and longer battles.
- Customization: names and colours. And that "rotate to see the unit" feature mlike in Fifa 98 (those were the days). My girlfriend has said she loves purple color for the legionaires. I use colour codes for my units. anti-cavalry purple, anti-infantry red and so on. I can select them in the battlefield faster this way...
- the order points are annoying...and a great idea!!!!!!!
On the downside
- I don't care about tutorials, but when I first started the game, the tutorial popped up but I had to stop playing it (hey, I have to eat). Then I restarted the game and I couldn't find the tutorial.
- The graphics are good buuuuuuut....I usually led the battle from a top perspective. They looked like ants or something. It was possible in fact to have a close look at the battlefield, but only by pressing space bar (pause). Oh, my legionaires look nice, but I don't have the time to look at them, my cavalry is in trouble on the other side of the field. is it possible to save the battles and watch them again, like a replay from Football Manager?? It would be nice.
- The game doesn't have one thing I like the most from Slitherine's games: the empire building section. So i guess it's going to be shortlived (more than Spartan, I still play that game from time to time
). Anyway, 100 scenarios are enough for me...
I think is going to be a major step forward in Slitherine's carrer, because they now have a great battle engine and Legion II will benefit of that. let's see what happens...

"The Art Of War: Fantasy" supporter!
the satellite view at the right bottom is very useful for adjusting views
a possible replay function is really a great idea
it seems there'll be a map/mission editor in the full version, am I right?
how many squads can one general command at most?

Only quibble so far with the demo is that; like in Legion; the Romans are equipped with Lorrica Segmentata armor at a much earlier date than was historical. I would have much prefered that armor be made an advanced upgrade like the other upgrades. It would really be a treat when your Legions switch from Hamata to Segmentata, as well as being historicly accurate. I guess the timeline for the game would actually make it more appropriate to have Hamata the entire time and I would have preferred that as well. What does Slitherine have against chainmail? Could this be made optional?
Hi!
I'm not going to speek for slitherine but I do believe you will find that in the game itself, you will, unlike the demo, begin as a tribal faction with a small group of light troops and spearman. As you progress through the campaign you will have options to buy republican units and then imperial ones. The better they are the more they cost, and you just won't be able to afford to buy these units until you are well into the campaign.
The campaign in the demo I believe are historical battles which were linked together to form the campaign. "Your army" will look a whole lot different when playing the game.
