Re: support fire
Yes only close range.
You see the errata this makes it a little clearer on p 51. You can only support fire into a support area. That is defined best on the diagram on p 52.

Support fire can only be used on an enemy unit that is within your units 'support area'.....which is 1 base width to your units flank and 2MU forwards.

Re: support fire
Support area is not affected by terrain like buildings or your friends beside you being just a few mils ahead of you?
Blathregut did not like my using my Jagers to support my grenadiers in a building, and they were about 7mm back from the front edge of the building terrain base. I looked in the rules and did not see anything stopping me from support firing.
Which brings up another question, is shooting as a support mandatory if you are in a support position and the chargers cross within 2 Mu of your front, could you instead just shoot them normally instead of using the support procedure? You get more dice from just shooting than you would from adding 1 die to support from flank.

Understabdable. FAQ-Buildings states: "There are no support dice when shooting to or from a building"Blathregut did not like my using my Jagers to support my grenadiers in a building, and they were about 7mm back from the front edge of the building terrain base.
