2013 United States Field of Glory Team Tournament Request for Proposal

The organizing body of the US Team Tournament (USTT) would like to extend an invitation to any party wishing to submit a proposal to host the 2013 Team Tournament.

The event will be held January (MLK Weekend). 4 man teams, 4 Rounds.
Format for the tournament will be established by the committee (IE Time Periods and scoring system). The group selected to host the event will be expected to comply with the decisions of the USTT on these matters.

Parties submitting proposals should address each of the following issues:

1) Venue – (The Committee has determined that sufficient gaming space to comfortably accommodate 48 + players should be the minimum requirement.)
2) Cost per team to cover expenses and prizes
3) Guest Hotel and Rates
4) Friday Night Gaming and / or Socializing Space Availability
5) Local Transportation and Airport Access Summary
6) Non-Playing Referee
7) Availability of a "stand by" team should an odd number of teams turn out
8) Prize Support
9) Catered lunch on Saturday (additional fee) to facilitate game play.
10) Any special ideas to boost turn out and participation (IE Team Spirit Awards, Sportsmanship Awards, Best Army Presentation, TV for NFL Playoff Games, etc)

Each of these factors will be taken into consideration by the USTT upon review of the proposal.

Full proposals addressing each of these items should be submitted to the USTT via Gino.Agnelly@Gmail.com no later than midnight on July 31, 2012.
The committee will review the proposals and announce an award of the 2013 event no later than August 15, 2012.

Please note that this request is for hosting of the 2013 event only and will be repeated each year.

Will this tournament require that it be run with the FoG 1.0 rules for 2013. Given the new announcement that the new FoG 2.0 will be released as an app for PC/MAC/iPad only, I doubt I will have any interest in participating in a 2.0 tournament in January (unless the organizers are willing to provide iPADs with the rules for all attendees ;-) ).

The version used will have to be agreed upon by the USTT but I can tell you that I will not support V2 for this year's Team Tournament.

The history of these events is we do NOT adopt new rules at the last minute.

So unless (unlikley) this is released immediately and receives widespread support and adoption, I would imagine that the January 2013 event uses the current rules. As Beither noted there will be consideration and significant discussion before any muscle twitches for a change for this event.

Well, I just saw a message fog 2 may be next week or so.........likely very much early enough to change.

So the choice will be....FOG 2 or let it die. Or dbm 3.2 hehe.

Or stay with FOG 1 which in my opinion wasn't broken to begin with.

FoG 2.0 as it stands will be unworkable in a tournament situation. There will be at most a couple of copies of the rules available on iPads plus one for ref on a laptop. So I see the options being:

- Go forward with 1.0
- Write up some US amendments that incorporate the 2.0 additions as a supplement to the 1.0 rulebook

and take the time between now and the team tournament to decide what to do next.

I like your thoughts Ethan as i don't see the other three Bunnies buying an Ipad just for a set of rules. Heck, Lee Cleveland still only uses Corel software.

As someone who has an intimate knowledge of the struggles of print vs electronic format (I am a librarian).

IMHO- I can see the idea that having an easily updatable electronic format might be desirable to a fluid changing text- I just don't think there is enough change to warrent going singularly to an e-format.

Unless Slitherine plans on dropping the artwork and design (which was a big seller of the rules to start with), costs are not that much cheaper with e-books compared to paper (design and layout costs are much the same between paper and eformat), plus you still incur the costs of maintaining a site and securing financial transactions, and updating customers ebooks (if that is the intention). You also still have advertizing costs.

As others have stated, I am also concerned about the variety of formats- I have a Kindle (well my daughter has)- yet we don't know if the rules will be available for that. Also, like the general public, we really don't know how many gamers have access, or financial ability to purchase a tablet or computer.

Publishers are pulling towards an electronic format, but in my opinion it is more of a control issue, rather than a pure finincial issue (publishers are now refusing to allow libraries to purchase e-books- I dont think that is the intent with Slitherine except they now reap all the profits on the sale of their work, not spread among hobby/book stores).

I think that the rules should be published in both formats, print and ebooks in order to see how this grand experiment will work. As the younger crowd is more indepth with the eformat, there will be greater calls for a pure eformat- I just don't think this is the time.

This will be the pragmatic solution that will occur worldwide. The first person to do a half decent v1.0 supplement will steal a march (pardon the pun) on bragging rights. The free v2 amendment sheet will go viral etc etc.

What we could do is keep playing version 1.0 and adopt U.S. Tournament rules. This is what NASAMW did for their major tournaments using WRG 7th edition before they bought it and changed it to Warrior. Since we know pretty much what the changes are we can adopt them with the tournament organizers decision. For example, some to the army changes are first rate and able to used right away (especially the Byzantine ones for us frustrated Decline and Fallers). That way there is no need to use 2.0 unless and until the issues raised in these forums go away.
