Max and Min For Single Divisions Question

Post by atatnet »

With regards to pg159 of ToN, after dividing the mininum of a unit type by 3 and rounding up to the nearest whole number, if this number is half a unit or more, does this number become the minimum for that unit type, or does the minimum number remain unchanged?

e.g. French Chasseurs a Cheval (unit size=4) from a cavalry reserve core list has a minimum of 8 in the reserve corp list. If a division of this corp is used in an infantry corp list, is the minimum number of bases of the Chasseurs:

a. 3 : calculation: (8/3=2.67, round up to 3).

or

b. 4 : calculation is the same as above, but since 3 is not a legal number for a cavalry unit, 4 is used.

or

b. 8 : calculation is the same as above, but since 3 is not less than half a unit, the normal minimum is not ignored and therefore remains at 8.

I believe the answer is a. (i.e.3)

Dividing 8 by 3 gives 2.66, which is at least 2 so doesn't reduce to zero, but rounds to the nearest whole number, which is 3. Of course to meet that minima you will need to field a legal unit, which will be 4 or 6 bases depending on the list. Since the minima is not zero the maxima remains unchanged so fielding 4 bases wil not be a problem.

You may also want to note that the minima only applies where the unit is of a type that could legally be part of the division that is being imported. For example, if you import an infantry division you can ignore the cavalry minima in the exporting list. In your case, if you were importing a cuirassier division you could ignore the minima for light cavalry and dragoons, since they cannot be legally fielded in the same division as cuirassiers in most of the French Cavalry Corps lists. There is an earlier thread on this issue.
