Lydian troops for new scenario?
I can create a new scenario with Persian (Cyrus) troops but the program does not provide a choice of Lydian troops, which are available only for D.A.G. battles. This lack prevents the creation of a scenario for Thymbra, which was Cyrus's most important victory. A pairing of Persian (Cyrus) and Lydian troops in D.A.G. shows how interesting a historical scenario of Thymbra could be, if only the Lydian troops were available in that mode. Is there any solution to this?

All the Lydian graphics from the DAG are in the editor, just spread about.ZeaBed wrote:I can create a new scenario with Persian (Cyrus) troops but the program does not provide a choice of Lydian troops, which are available only for D.A.G. battles. all the cavalry will be in the ancients folder under classic or hellenistic greek, the Lydian Hoplites are actually in the "persian" folder.... The other riffraff like the paphloginian hill peoples are likly in several locations but try any of the folders that feature Hellenistic style troops like selucid or bactrian folders.
Cheers!

Thanks! I find your phrase "riff-raff like the Paphlagonians" rather amusing, as the ancient Greeks looked down on them as oafish yokels and used them as butts for their jokes (q.v. Aristophanes).
Re: Lydian troops for new scenario?
I'm building the Lydian troops for my new scenario on the Battle of Thymbra. That the Lydian cavalry must be taken from the Hellenistic and Classical Greeks under the Ancients folder poses a design problem however, as they refer to Greek cavalry from the ca. 300 BC period (crested helmets, etc.) that are more advanced than those that must have been used by Croesus in 546 BC. Many other Lydian troops (and even some Cyrus Persian) have to be extrapolated in this fashion for this scenario. I guess that's a reason why this iconic battle has never been gamed in FoG.

You could consider using some of the Persian cavalry images. There are several used for the Late Achaemenids which might be appropriate. At the time of Cyrus invasion of Lydia, it is not at all clear how Hellenized the Lydian cavalry equipment would have been. It may well have been closer to what Persian and Assyrian equipment in style. There is also an image used for Thessalian cavalry without helmets and shields although I think some of the Persian images would be more appropriate.

Good point batesmotel. Thanks for the advice. The problem is getting enough variety of troops for this humongous battle, even reduced by one fourth (as per the 'modern historical consensus'), down from the very large order of battle we have from Xenophon.
