I'm trying to ID the French regt. shown on the cover of this army book. The flag in the background appears to be
FRENCH FOOT GUARDS, but the uniforms don't match.
It is an odd depiction of French soldiers, perhaps? The French carried charges up until 1683 and at the end of 1683 the sword was put on a waistbelt. These have neither charges nor waistbelts. OTOH, uniforms were not specified until 1685, when Gardes were specified as wearing blue. The flag is indeed the flag of the Gardes though.
The uniform on the cover of Duty & Glory is that given as plate B1 by Chartrand in his Osprey, Louis XIV's Army (Men-at-Arms 203). The grey uniform was adopted shortly after 1661 and was changed for blue in 1685. The particular uniform shown on the cover looks like that described in January 1679 (op cit p.15-16).
