Large units and dice

Post by bahdahbum »

By the way, a large infantry unit can shoot at short range with 6 dice . Now what about a large unit in 'ordre profond" . Should it not shoot as a small unit as the frontage is the same ?

Melle is a different question as large units in "ordre profond" furnish they own rear support . Should they fight as small units + rear support or large unit with rear support ?

See p.105 "Deep Formation"

"It fires and fights as a small unit, but will count as a large unit for reducing the number of hits on it by 1. A large unit in deep formation also provides rear support for itself".

It may also be covered on other pages I think.

Note that for a unit of conscripts to get an extra dice for CTs it must be supported by another unit and not just itself (see p.70 penultimate bullet).

Hi Andy,

See p.57 and p.107. A Large unit in deep formation self-supports. So it does help with Cohesion Tests, but not with Complex Move Tests (because the latter is to do with Training) and the former to do with Elan).

Cheers,

Rear support helps with a +1 die melee as wel :D

Now back to basing ( the Danish auxilliary division is based, now rebasing the swedish corps and ordering some more bases for the rest of my old units from 22 years back)

John,

apologies, but unfortunately I have to disagree with you.

p.70 "Conscripts gain an additional dice if they have another unit giving them rear support, or are in a Defensive Position."

No mention that self supporting units may gain a dice on CTs.

p.57 "Large infantry and Cavalry units can also defend themselves by forming a deeper tactical formation 3 bases deep. In this formation the unit fires, and fights in combat with the same dice as a small unit. It receives the combat bonus for having rear support regardless of the presence of other units, and retains the reduction of hits due to being in a large unit."

Whilst the combat bonus for rear support is mention there is no suggestion that a large unit in deep formation gains any bonus on CTs.

Since neither the section of the rules dealing with Cohesion Tests, nor the section dealing with Rear Support state that a self supporting unit of conscripts gets a bonus on CTs I find it difficult to conclude that they do.

ps: If this post comes accross as overly argumentative, I apologise. It isn't my intention.

Any chance of some pictures of the Swedish troops.

I have been doing a bit of research as suggested into the Dutch-Belgium Troops in 1815,its been interesting reading about their Cavalry and Charges carried out by them. Opened my eyes to their role in the Battles.

I'm thinking into looking next year into building a Dutch-Belgium Force.

To confirm .....
Conscripts only get the additional dice for Cohesion tests if there is another unit giving them rear support.
They do not generate it for themselves by being in deep formation.
