In our last game we ran into a situation neither of us was sure when to remove broken troops.
During the Austrian turn a unit of Hussars charged French Hussars and routed them off, and ended spent and disordered. I tried not to pursue but failed and pursued into a unit of conscripts in line who were also disordered after seeing their Hussars routing nearby.
During the second combat the infantry broke, but my Hussars took 2 hits and ended up wavering. Pursuit put them right smack between a unit of French light infantry, 2 MU away and a unit of artillery on the other side. Lousy pursuit roll that time.
during the French assault phase the light infantry declared a charge on the Hussars, who were wavering and failed their CT to stand. So they would rout directly away from the charge, and there is the French artillery to their right. So they don't move as they were within about 1 Mu after the turn, and the light infantry charge in and contact the Hussars rear.
Question, do the Hussars get removed at contact or at the end of the combat phase?
We were not to sure on this, I thought at the end of combat as the light infantry is busy hacking up horse steaks for the turn.
If they get removed when contact is made, the light infantry is then free to fire during the shooting phase, but can't move?
when do they get removed

Re: when do they get removed
"If a broken unit is contacted by an assault or a pursuit they are immediately destroyed and removed from the table." p.72.
So I'd say they are removed in the Assault Phase in this case.
No need to make horse steaks, the Hussars either surrender or scatter so compleatly there is no hope of recovering them, I suppose.
I can't see any reason why the light infantry can't fire. They haven't retired or changed formation as the result of a reaction to an assault and are no longer in contact in the Firing Phase p.48. I agree they can't move in the Movement Phase, since they moved in the Assault Phase p.35.

Also, unless I misread a rule, the infantry cant charge the hussars anyway because they're cavalry.

The Austrian horse was wavering at that point.danno81 wrote:Also, unless I misread a rule, the infantry cant charge the hussars anyway because they're cavalry.

Wavering units do not pursue.During the second combat the infantry broke, but my Hussars took 2 hits and ended up wavering. Pursuit put them right smack between a unit of French light infantry, 2 MU away and a unit of artillery on the other side. Lousy pursuit roll that time.

Page 48: "A unit is still allowed to fire if it attempted to assault an enemy unit during the assault phase but failed to contact due to enemy fire."We were not to sure on this, I thought at the end of combat as the light infantry is busy hacking up horse steaks for the turn.

In this case the infantry did contact, therefore cannot fire. (nor may it make another move).

Re: when do they get removed
My bad actually thats how they ended up in such a bad spot, after defeating the infantry they dropped to wavering and had to stand where they were (was a few weeks ago forgot how exactly they got into that mess). One of those times were a nice pursuit would maybe have taken them out of the fire.
Now if they had listened to me and not pursued in the first place....
Thanks for the answers, next time we will know.
