First Game played

Post by GKChesterton1976 »

I played my first game yesterday against another Sydney playtester. I am now reviewing a lot of things going through the rules again.

I quite enjoyed it - I was using Parthians with not many cataphracts and lots of crud (captured Pikemen, Hillmen, Greek Militia, other Militia) against Late Republican Roman. 800 points a side.

We played for about 4 and half hours and only got to a moderate victory to the Parthians, but then we had decided to stop early and work a few other combats out on a hypothetical basis.

My further reading has not shown too many things we were doing wrong.

I would find an index useful, even for playtesting purposes, and I will likely at some stage have to tag lots of different topics in my copy of the rules.

One event in the game I found very funny was when my hillmen (medium foot, protected, average, light spear) were one inch away from my opponent's light horse and charged them. The light horse evaded away rolling a 1 and the hillmen rolled a 6 catching the light horse in the rear. I am not sure that foot should be able to roll up, just down or normal!

Regarding the LH being caught by the MF. It's a 1 in 36 so I can live with this.

If the LH break in the impact or melee phase then you could argue it's a result of panic caused by a mis-timed evade.

If the LH survive the impact & melee phase they they will have to break off in the JAP and will escape.

Quite amusing indeed - got to give a glimmer of hope to the foot tropops if the Lh get too close.

Glad you enjoyed it. Experience suggests its a bout 5 games to get up to speed and move from mechanics to tactics.

I probably found it the easiest new game ever to take up - I am a Warrior/ 7th player of about 17 years experience and I recognised a lot of the movement mechanics - there was a sort of flavour of the good aspects of 6th to the game which I liked too.

One of our objectives was to make the game fairly easy to pick up and play, but then to take a long time to master all the odds in systems. Historical feel another major objective and we aimed to give the overall pakacgae very much a feel all of its own.

We'll look foward to hearing how it feels after a few more games.
