overlapping counter charge

Post by deadtorius »

Had a situation in todays game. Both the French and Austrians had units of Hussars right beside infantry units, and the Austrians were slightly offset so 1 base of Hussars was directly in front of the French infantry. The Austrian infantry was slightly ahead of their Hussars.
The French Hussars declared a charge on the Austrian Hussars and the French infantry declared a charge on the Austrian infantry. So far so good. However when the Austrian Hussars counter charge they land right in front of the charge path of the French infantry, who will not make contact with the Austrian infantry.

How do you handle that? It is kind of like an intercept charge by the cav, but they can't since they are the target of the charge and the French infantry can't charge steady cavalry. In the end the French decided to call off their charges since we couldn't figure out how to handle that one.

Well - if the setup was like this:

AAXX

.BBYY

AA = French Hussars
BB=Austrian Hussars
XX=French Infantry
YY=Austrian infantry

AA charge BB & XX charge YY
What happens is AA declares a wheel towards BB and XX declares a wheel towards YY
BB courntercharges AA, and must wheel towards AA before measuring its forwards movement.
Depending on distance apart at the start of the charge it should miss the infantry XX (it can wheel up to 2MU).
XX can then complete its charge into the infantry.

If there is no way that the infantry BB can avoid hitting XX with its countercharge then XX can't charge, because it would effectivly be declaring a charge on enemy cavalry.
In this case the best solution would be to declare the charge by AA during this move and charge with the infantry next move.

Thanks Terry, wasn't sure if you could wheel in a counter charge, guess I was thinking intercepts that you can't wheel with. Next time out its a new army from Triumph :D
