So far, now that ol' deadtorius has figured out the ins and outs:

1. The Austrians manage to negate/reduce the French medium-ranged fire with carefully placed cavalry. Unfortunately, the French still pay the reformed price.

2. The cheapiness of the Austrians means larger units facing the French and even less hits with the -1 for large units.

3. The Austrians, with artillery attachments, are actually out-shooting the French line infantry for a mere 2 points:
...French line infantry (small average/drilled) = 40 points
...Austrian line infantry (small average/drilled) = 32 points + 10 points artillery attachment

If I try to go better quality with even one or two light infantry units or artillery, I shrink even more.

Anyone else finding the Austrians tougher than first appearance?

Apart from Westphalians (who I have only used twice), 1809 Austrians are by far my most successful army. Probably played about 30 games with them, seem to win about 75% of the time. As you say, large units and cavalry effectively negate enemy skirmish shooting.

I have tried Ottomans once (disaster), while my French Guard only have 3 wins from about 10 attempts ...
