First 25mm FoG competition

Post by donm »

Having been given the all clear from JD we now need to see if we can get the minimum of 12 players to enter.

Basic details are as follows;

Proposed date, 1st and 2nd December (two weeks after Warfare).
Place, The Scout hut, Clevedon, North Somerset.
Army size, 650 points.
Table size 6' x 4'
Numbers, minimum 12 maximum 24.

Once I have the minimum number, I will sort out the full details.

If anyone is not a current beta tester then they will need to 'sign up'.

Remember, its not the size that counts, its the way you FoG it

Richard,

You will be pleased to know that we only decided to run this last night and I have 9 people already.

If the demand is there we may be able to increase the maximum numbers.

Perhaps I can do better with my Sassanids than I did at Britcon in the DBM comp :D :D :D

Soon. We are on a tight publication schedule and have to concentrate on the next books due before we start working on any more lists. However, there is sufficient interest in the early medieval "Dark Ages" period that it should be one of the next projects.

In 25mm do you still use inch long MUs or do you use 40mm?

Same movement and terrain sizes as 15mm. The only difference is the bases sizes.

Doesn't that impact on play fairly badly - a lot of the dynamics of the game (especially with evading) rely on being able to get through units and actually make it through - with 25mm the bases cover a larger area and the evading units will have movements relatively smaller to their base size. And that is only one problem I can see with using the 15mm ground scale with the larger figures.

I play a lot in 25mm, and I might see how it impacts in my playtesting!

Essentially both figure scales use the same ground scale, the only difference being a larger notional number of men per base in 25mm. The 15mm/25mm moves in FoG are already similar to the 25mm moves in DBM. Since a lot of people play 25mm on 6'x4' tables (the same as used for 15mm) it seemed sensible to us not to crowd the tables even further by making the 25mm moves even longer.

This was taken into account and is the reason for LF getting an extra 2MU to pass through if needed. Also, any bases that reach the interpenetrated battle group pass fully through even if they exceed this, which in practice adds another 30mm to the move in 25mm. One of our recent amendments is to make troops bursting through friends pass all the way through if there is room beyond, even if this exceeds the normal move.

Suffice it to say that issues arising from the different base widths and depths have been taken into account and fully tested.

The 25mm and 15mm games are not, of course, identical - but people don't play 15mm against 25mm so this is of no great importance. The rules have been fully tested in both scales. We have taken great care to ensure that causes of cohesion tests such as seeing troops break or commanders lost affect troops the same number of bases away so that the games play as similarly as possible without having to use difference distances for each scale. The main difference is that commanders are in range of a smaller number of bases in 25mm - however, armies tend to be less spread out in 25mm which compensates.

Those who play games in both scales will find it much easier to switch between the two than in other systems where the different scales use different distances.

I played my first games of FoG at the end of last year. Initailly I only played 25mm using my Sassanids. I was surprised how well the skirmishing game worked in 25mm, certainly better that DBM.

I think you need to try it :)

I will see how it goes in my test games - I have finally located another Sydney playtester so I can avoid the dangers of masturbation - I play regularly in 25mm and 15mm, mostly in Warrior - they use 1inch per 40paces in 15mm and 40mm per 40 paces in 25mm - I will try the rules as written first but may run a trial with 40mm per 40 paces as well - If I only have a 6 by 4 to play on I usually play 15mm. I try to play 25mm on 8 by 5 or larger tables

Thank heavens. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
