Moscow 41 DV Tips, Original Campaign

Post by ElIndio »

I'm currently re-playing the original campaign alongside the DLC (Colonel setting) and have now reached the Moscow 41 map on the original campaign.

This may have been discussed before but regarding the criteria for a DV in Moscow you have to complete with 8 turns remaining so by turn 14 if I recall correctly :!:

Is this even possible with a map of this size :?: :shock:

I have done the map previously with a marginal victory but now as a more experienced player I have a much better army assembled than on my first playthrough.

Hence, has anyone any tactics or technique in how to approach this one for a DV?

It's a while since i played the original campaign last time but if i remember correctly it's mostly a question of luck. If the weather is working in your favor you have a quite decent chance to get a DV. If you keep getting rain all the time grounding your air force and turning the ground into mud then forget it. The good thing tho is from the gaming point of view a MV on Moscow 41 is preferable as you can get a longer campaign path that way and still win get to invade the USA.

The way my campaign has gone I believe I need the DV here in Moscow 41 to get to Sealion 42, otherwise there is no path to the US campaign. :?

So far I have had:

Poland = DV
Norway = DV
Low Countries = DV
France = MV
Greece = DV
Barbarossa = MV
Kiev = DV
Moscow 41 to play!

Hence I missed Sealion 40 so to make the US this time around (by my reckoning), I need DV Moscow 41 and DV Sealion 42 (no mean feat), otherwise the Stalingrad meatgrinder beckons.... :evil:

Yes you're right. If you missed Sealion 40 then i am afraid you need to get MV in Moscow 41 to be able to get to Sealion 42. Tho considering how much of a pain Sealion 40 already can be you may want to reconsider it. :)

Moscows a tough one (as it was in real life) that requires a mix of speed, organisation, good weather and some good luck to get right. Some good units to get in Moscow are the mechanised nebelwefer artillery for those entrenched positions and a paratrooper or two to pick up strategic towns deep in the rear to supply, buy and attack from. Use your aircraft to hit entrenched postions you plan to break before your ground units arrive. Keep your army groups pressing forward in force as fast as you can. Don't get separated or drive up in bits and pieces (maintain cohesive army groups).
The only time you should slow down in moscow is when bad weather is coming. It is imperative to supply your low ground units before the snow and mud arrives so you can maintain forward momentum during the freeze (or you waste a turn supplying again later). Its the other way round for aircraft. Make sure there supplied and sitting over their targets before the sun comes out (so you can double up if needed).
Keep a close eye on the clock and your progress on the strategic map. The timetable is tight so you gotta move fast and decisively. Its a great battle
