Upgrade from StuH 42 to StuG IV

Post by Zhivago »

I know the StuH 42 is classified as an arty piece, and the StuG IV is an anti-tank gun. However, they both seem so close in some respects to me that it would seem logical to allow the StuH 42 to be upgraded to the StuG IV. The Stug IV has a 2 range arty piece, but it has a crap soft attack, but a good hard attack. The StuH 42 has a great soft attack cannnon, but only 1 range, and its HA is not great. Would be nice to have a StuG IV with the best of both vehicles. Kind of similar to the Russian SU-122.

The problem is that technically it's not possible. I doubt they will make cross-category upgrading possible.

But now that you mention it.. why DOES the StuG IV have the artillery capability anyway it makes no sense.

Yeah - Stug IV should be a dedicated anti-tank weapon, with a slightly better stats than Stug III. It shouldn't have any artillery capabilities like for example Stuh 42.

In this case, it was probably assigned into the arty category due to the gameply reasons, because the Germans have already many types of the SPAT guns. it's apitty though. If Stug IV was a better anti tank weapon than Stug III, then the players could still realy on it, during the last years of war, instead of having to upgrade SPAT to Jagdpanthers or Jagdtigers.

The Stug IV is class 3,which is the AT class.

It just happens to have a dual ranged arty role

Why would you make the StuG IV any better than the StuGIII given that the former was simply the superstructure and weapon of the later mounted on a PzIV chassis? Except for ammo carried (63 vs 54), in all stats that count the StuGIV was no different than the bulk of StuGIIIG production.

I'd give it a slightly better armor - maybe +1 compared to the Stug III - same difference as between Panzer III and Panzer IV. The maybe I'd give it +1 initiative - just for the gameplay reasons, to mark the progress between the models. Anyway, there are much worst inconsistencies in the units stats in the game, like for example the Stug IV 2 hexes arty range.

The Germans really do not have a multipurpose mobile artillery weapon that can kick ass like the Russian 122's and 152's. The closest thing would be a hybrid of the StuH 42 and StuG IV. But it wasn't meant to be...
