artillery in armies without firearms

Post by footslogger »

It looks like that if you have artillery in an army without firearms (well, without either pike and/or shot) when your artillery is captured, you can get it back, but it will never shoot again. Is this right?

Yes. You will "own" it, but it will remain uncontrolled.

you can recapture it but it will shoot as poor so re-rolling 6's for the rest of the game. Same applies to your opponent when he captures it

According to the rules, you only regain control (so it can shoot) if you capture with a pike and/or shot battle group. So if your medium foot archers recapture it, it's not shooting.

Yes, and that makes a lot of sense. Artillerists in an army otherwise lacking firearms would be irreplaceable specialists and the infantry would be unlikely to have men able to make effective use of cannon. A western army would be likely to have some with service in the artillery, experience assisting artillery (such as battalion guns), or knowledge of the general technology and observation.
