Shooting Ranges

Why do Slings and Javelins not have a maximum range? I can see that the effective range is the ideal range for shooting, but how can I shoot at a target outside the effective range if no maximum distance is given?

The authors' assumption is that those weapons are for game purposes totally ineffective beyond effective range.

Or put another way, they are fully effective up to their maximum range.
