Assault questions from QF mission

If less than 2 MU starting assault can the unit being assaulted stand and fire?

If Austrian cavalry charging french line infantry can they form square and defensive fire? if or if not how?

The French infantry immediately takes a cohesion loss for the Austriasn cavalry declaring a charge within 2MU.

The French then has a choice of:
a) forming square after taking a Cohesion Test to see if they drop another cohesion level
b) stand and firing after taking a Cohesion Test to see if they drop another cohesion level

The French can't form square AND fire. It is one or the other.
