Game crash: Commander Europe at War Gold and Ports

Post by jjmcnick »

Hello,
Can you kindly help, but please note that I have almost zero computer skills and am not au fait with computer terminology; so can you please phrase your reply in plain English with as much explanatory help in order for me to act upon your instructions. Thanks.
The problems are:
1) The game crashes (screen goes black).

2) Problem with loading ground units onto naval transports ie at times loading does not occur even though the unit was adjacent and stationary at start of move. Note: Obviously I'm aware that certain ports are politically "frozen" until the country is at war (eg USA prior to Dec '41 etc). The ports that I'm referring to are either Axis or Allied when the appropriate country is in the war.

Look forward to hearing from you,
Kind regards,
John A Nicholson

Go to *\My Documents\CEAW\ (i.e., browse to the folder CEAW inside your "My Documents" folder. Inside this folder you should see a file name, "settings.txt". Delete that file and restart CEaW gold.

In CEaW gold you cannot load garrisons onto transports. Is that the issue? Also, if you don't have room in or adjacent to the port to form the transport (i.e., these hexes are occupied) then that would explain what you're seeing too.

Thank you for the info.
1) Game crash. I'll do as you say.
2) No I'm aware that garrisons can't be loaded and there was ample space. As an example playing Allies, the Allied unit in Canada could not be loaded.
Do you have any more thoughts
Kind Regards John Nicholson

2) Further to my correspondence of earlier today, I would add that on turn 1 (playing Allies with slight Axis advantage) it is not possible to load transports from Glasgow, Edinburgh and Belfast into empty adjacent seaspace.
Incidentally 3): The version I am playing is CEAW v 1.12. Is this the latest or are there any upgrades?
4) Can you tell me why it is not possible for the Allies to invade ("occupy" euphemistically) Persia. This happened in August 1941. Is it possible to add this option?

I'm not familiar with playing games with an advantage and I haven't played the vanilla game (i.e., CEAW Gold) is years (probably 3 at least). I only suggestion I have there is to start a hotseat game without any advantage (i.e., even) and see if you can load the transports in that game. If you can, then I'd start a hotseat game with a slight Axis advantage and see what happens there. If you can't in this second case then that's a consequence of the advantage setting. If not; then it must be a bug.

There's the Grand Strategy (GS) expansion, which is a free add on. The current version is GSv2.00; but we're expecting the release GSv2.10 within the month (hopefully). The link to the download for GSv2.00 is: http://www.slitherine.com/ceaw_gs2 The link announcing it's release (almost a year ago) is: viewtopic.php?p=228158#p228158 As I said; we're expecting GSv2.10 out within this month.

They can and do in GSv2.00. In GSv2.10 they have to deal with an Iraqi rebellion so in GSv2.10, the allied player is advised to keep all Iraqi cities and oil fields garrisoned until the rebellion happens and is dealt with.

Hello
SUMMARY
To summarise the current position is as follows:
a) When I posted the original questions 1) and 2) I was using CEAW v 1.12.
b) When I deleted (on your advice) the file "settings.txt" I was still in 1.12 and the game still still crashed after carrying out the deletion.
c) It was at this juncture that I wrote to you (see "EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING").
d) I have now learned about the "Grand Strategy Expansion v 2.0.
e) I have now downloaded this from the Slitherine site.
Questions:
f) Do I need to reinstall "settings.txt" to use the Expansion v 2.0. If "yes" how do I do it (bear in mind my previous comments about my lack of computer skills)?
g) As the Expansion is effectively a new game are the my questions regarding crashing and inabilty to use ports irrelevant in the context of Expansion 2.0?
h) As I may also wish to play the simpler 1.12 original do you still need to provide solutions to the crashing and port loading problems in the context of the 1.12 original?
I look forward to hearing from you

Further to my "SUMMARY" (see earlier --- reply awaited) there is a now a further major problem:
regarding e) The Grand Strategy Expansion v 2.0 will NOT launch using the Slitherine launcher (which was reached by pressing the screen icon).
How do I get this game to work?

I'm not clear on what you're asking, if you would restate then I'll take a crack at answering your question (if I can).

Have you installed it? If so, did you install it to the correct location? Check out: viewtopic.php?p=229170#p229170

With reference to your request to restate my query, you need to read chronologically the several e-mails sent to you under the heading "Game crash:Commander Europe at War Gold and Ports". The SUMMARY sets out the basic questions and restates the position just prior to my sending you the final piece of correspondence that tells you that I cannot get the Grand Strategy game to work. Have you read the SUMMARY? If "yes" what parts are not clear? Have you read the whole sequence of correspondence? If "yes" what parts do you not understand?
Someone has kindly attempted to answer the question about the Grand Strategy game not working and I have been referred to a site to verify whether the game has been installed. I will repeat again what I said at outset (please refer to the first post) that I do not possess any computer skills and I do not understand what is contained on the site.
I purchased this game over the last few weeks under the misapprehension that the free Grand Strategy download would be a simple process (ie click a button or log into a website). I have already referred this to your boss Iain McNeill who referred me to Christian Bassani who in turn referred me this tecnical forum. If you cannot help me, let me know and I'll send the whole chronological sequence of e-mails to Iain McNeil and ask him to deal with it as I seem to be making no progress whatsoever and am getting very annoyed.
I recently purchased Gary Grigsby's WAW AWD and it did not work. This has now been sorted out after much correspondence (including several with Iain McNeill). I now find that the 1.12 version of CommanderEAW keeps crashing and I can't get the Grand Strategy update to work! Do any of your games work?

I don't work for or have any association with Slitherine. I, and all others associated with GS, are fans of the game and do this as a hobby. Though, like everyone else, I do this as a hobby and not as my day job I have helped countless people work through installation problems and get GS up and running. The bottom line is that most people never encounter problems getting GS installed and for the minority that do, the people on this forum (me included) are generally willing and able to help them work through their installation problems and get GS running.

With that said, I don't really care for your condescending and demanding attitude and with that my part in trying to help you is finished.

Hello
Please accept my apologies. I assumed (wrongly, my fault) that you were a Slitherine employee. Again my apologies. You can sense my frustration with Slitherine/Matrix: I have purchased 2 games in the past 6 weeks and neither have worked, resulting in prolonged and to me confusing correspondence with them. I now find that the 2.0 extension won't work either! You will gather that I am a complete novice in terms of computer skills and find terminology and moving around the computer between files etc very, very difficult. My computer is new and state of the art and was purchased only to play strategy games.
Thank for your efforts to help.
I think the best thing is for me to disinstall the game and start from outset again.
Regards and once again apologies.

I accept. Now let's walk through this slowly and get GS 2.0 working.

1. From whom (Slitherine or Matrix) did you make the original purchase of CEaW?

2. What brand of CEaW? (The Military Edition or Gold)? When the game starts up is there a video?

3. When you bring up CEaW and before you load a game what's the version number (lower right hand corner) (e.g., 1.12)?

Hello again
Thank you for your most generous offer to help: much appreciated.
Before you kindly responded, I managed to enlist the aid of my sister who has considerably more computer skills than I and after a somewhat tortuous process we (or should I say "she") solved the problem and the game now ( hopefully) works.
Thanks again,
John Nicholson

I'm glad you've got it working. Enjoy your attempt at world domination ... we'll at least domination in Europe and North Africa. :)
